As some of you know I coach a traveling/showcase team of 16 - 18 year olds. We have been very successful. I'm asked all the time from players about lifting. Since I am not a certified strength trainer, I tend to be very unspecific in my replies. The only one I work more specifically with is my son. What I do tell them generally, is to work baseball strength, you should always do twice as many pull exercises as push. It's a very simple concept but it gives the body more balance, (in my opinion) and pull exercises are more beneficial to baseball players. I won't go into details about the exercises my son does, just trying to get your opinions on the concept.

    Thanks

    Good Q!

whatever he does do in lifting do light go light with MANY reps and even more importantly the stretching routine BEFORE and AFTER must be thorough and complete!

A well-respected strength & conditioning coach once convinced me that baseball players can in fact lift weights year round, even on game days. He reminded me that pros lift weights year-round also. You are right about certain exercises, and I'm no expert, but I specifically know how important stretching BEFORE and AFTER the workout is. Both my sons have lifted throughout high school and its helped them both tremendously.

I would suggest any dad to consult someone who you trust about this subject for your son, but you need to find someone who is familiar with baseball-specific exercises.

This is a great topic for discussion and maybe others will come on here and share specific exercises for those that don't have access to a trusted strength/conditioning coach.

    Almost always...

and often neglected for decades period is again the before and after stretching routines A MUST unless a young player wants to put himself and his careeer in real danger by lifting and not doing so especially when dealing with the arms and shoulders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
