I have been an assistant coach for a few years and really enjoy all aspects of the game, especially pitching. This past season I was put in my first role as a head coach. I will say to start that I have little aspirations of being a head coach, especially as long as I work for a head coach who knows what he's doing.

And I've been lucky- for the most part the head coaches I have been with have been very good and I have learned what to do versus what not to do. Anyways, our team was bottom of the barrel awful last season and it took us a month to win as many games as we have in our first two days this early season.

So what I have learned is.... When you have a group of average to bad talented players you will always look like a bad coach and every parent will second guess you and talk out loud about how bad you are. But the same coach takes a group of players with a little bit of baseball ability that work hard everyday and he is patted on the back and applauded.

A good example, last year when we squeezed and didn't get the bunt down, a mother yelled out that I should shoot myself. Today we squeezed and I heard the same Mother tell someone I was a gutsy coach. (by the way her son was the hitter both seasons).

A word to young coaches, only coach good players!!!!!!

Unless, of course, that parent emails you information about upcoming coaching clinics.
