Why the #'s for college softball?

    Why do some Div 1 teams carry 20 - 25 players on the roster but regularly only play about 11-12 position players plus a pitcher or two? some of these reserves must be tired of travelling and suiting up but only practicing.

    ......budget cuts are everywhere East. From what I've seen this year, at least in softball, only 18 or so are on the travel squad.
    I figure baseball might travel a few more kids.
