Update: Computer rankings of NC's travel teams (April 30)

Below are the computer rankings through the week of April 25-26.

A reminder – These are computer ratings using the scores of tournaments from all associations in North Carolina. The computer model is very similar to those that generate the BCS football rankings. They consider scores and margin of victory and strength of schedule. They provide ‘’the best mathematical explanation’’ for the scores of some 2,500 games played this year.

Aunt Bee is not affiliated with any tournament organization or team and has no agenda except to make travel softball in the Tar Heel State more interesting to those who follow it.

Key –
W-L = won-loss record in bracket games and pool games that seed.
RAT = Team’s rating. Subtracting one team’s rating from another provides a projected margin of victory if one played the other, not considering run rules.
SOS = Strength of schedule, or the average strength of a team’s opponent.

Note: Scores from the Got Game! Fastpitch tournament in Eden are not yet available but will be added for next week.

 

8-and-under
The second-ranked Lady Tigers 05 of Mount Pleasant and the third-ranked Knockouts 8U of Asheboro renewed their storied rivalry last weekend at the TopGun Super Regional in Salisbury. These young teams have met on the diamond seven times this year, with the Lady Tigers winning four. The Knockouts beat them 13-4 in the winner’s bracket Saturday, only to see the Lady Tigers come back and beat them twice for the title. The LT’s have outscored the Knockouts 60-59 in those seven games. Pretty cool. Meanwhile, the No. 1-ranked JC Clippers of Smithfield were idle. Congrats to the Crossfire 06, who won the Crystal Sports tournament in Gastonia and moved to No. 13.

10-and-under
The No. 1-ranked Green Machine 03 of Stanfield did not play. The second-ranked Chaos 03 of Goldsboro and the third-ranked High Point Rockers swapped positions from last week after both won their tournaments, the Chaos in Clayton (USSSA) and the Rockers in Salisbury (TopGun). The change is barely significant, as the two are judged to be within 0.20 runs of each other. But Rocker fans might point out the fact that they’ve beaten the Chaos in three of four meetings this season. It is evident that the computer model cares less about who wins tournaments and head-to-head and more about a mathematical evaluation of all of the scores. Margin of victory also is significant. Tournament champions that moved up this week are the Lady Razorbacks of Salisbury (to No. 10 from No. 18) and the Carolina Elite 03 of Louisburg (to No. 9 from No. 14).

Biggest movers in 12U this week are Team TFS Storm of Mebane (to No. 18 from No. 48 after winning the ASA tournament in Oxford) and the Diamond Crushers of Midland (to No. 22 from No. 42 after winning a TopGun event in Concord). The top-ranked Lady Blues remained on top after going 5-2 in an ASA qualifier in Tennessee, but there was some shuffling in the rest of the top five as the Bombs of Fuquay-Varina jumped three spots to No. 3 despite not playing, and the NC Challengers 01 of Raleigh stayed No. 5 despite winning a 14U tournament. The Cleveland Angels dropped only one spot but remained ahead of the Challengers despite losing twice in a 14U event. Best explanation is that last week’s results of those teams’ opponents caused some slight re-thinking of strength of schedule. In any event, those top teams below the Lady Blues are rated within a run of each other.
Update: The No. 2 Charlotte Starz Gold won an ASA tournament in South Carolina, beating No. 8 Lady Tigers 01 in the final. Congrats to those teams for representing N.C. well.

The NSA’s tournament last week in Huntersville drew eight of the top-15 teams in last week’s rankings. The No. 1-ranked Carolina Cardinals won it. But then a strange thing happened with the new rankings were computed – the Cardinals fell to No. 2. How did that happen? The new No. 1 is the NC Challengers 99, who went 4-0 last week at the ASA Oxford tournament, outscoring their opponents 33-3. If it were up to Aunt Bee, the Cardinals would still be #1, but the computer rates teams based on their average per-game performance, regardless of how often a team has played. The Challengers are 4-0, dominating a small sample of teams, at least a couple of which must be pretty good or else the computer would not have reacted this way. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 14-2 (and unbeaten in North Carolina) and are a decent bet to regain the top spot unless NCC can maintain its excellent play week in, week out. (btw, the Challengers' edge is by 3/100th of a run.)
