Tuesday weather: Snow in the west

    Snow is predicted to blanket most of western NC today. It is being pushed over the mountains and a flakes are falling at the higher elevations. Accumulations of up to 8 inches are expected up in the mountains.

    In the Piedmont, the snow will arrive later today. Currently it is still north of I-40. It depends on how quickly the storm system pushes it south and east.

    Accumulations around Charlotte area may be as high as 4 inches, but most of that is expected to fall in the later afternoon/evening hours and overnight.

    With extreme good luck, the snow may hold until after some of the 4:30 starts in the southern Piedmont. In the northern Piedmont, the games are in serious jeparody.

    If it happens, don't expect any makeup games before thursday ... wednesday should be a white-out with melting not happening until mid-day wednesday at the earliest.

    With conference play expected to start for a lot of teams as early as next week, this will affect pitching rotations and team preparations as they head into the final prep week for the season.

    A fairly large band is presently over the Winston-Salem region and moving towards Greensboro. It may be a bit warm still today to get any frozen stuff. A second band is over Statesville and moving towards the Rowan County area.

    A serious band of bad weather has formed over the Boone area and a large patch is just South-east of Asheville.

    So far, everything has stayed north of I-40, but the Asheville band is threatening the Rutherford county region now.

    A thin band of wet is leaving Gaston county and working north towards Lincolnton. The area south-east of Asheville along I-26 looks very nasty. The Boone area is threatened and a strong band is passing just south of Greensboro.

    South-Central Piedmont still looks good.

    Not too bad so far for the Charlotte-Concord-Monroe region. Gaston county looks like a maybe.

    Should be hearing about games within the next couple hours.
