Team USA Knocked out of the Olympics in Athens next summer. How can this be?

    Baseball America

"Americas past time will be played without America"

Team USA was beaten in the quarterfinals by Mexico 2-1.

Tommy Lasorda who managed a team to a Gold Medal in 2000 called the lost "a disgrace"

    How can Alderson say this?
"We lost a game. I don't think it's a setback for U.S. baseball," said Sandy Alderson, an executive vice president in the commissioner's office and the top American official with the team

The pity of the matter is that the US team IS trying to load up like they do in basketball. They use mainly minor-league players and prospects. Guys who might otherwise have been in the Arizona Fall League.

It's almost like it's a compromise between Amateur and Pro with the U.S. baseball team. It may be a good thing in the long run. Without the U.S. in the Olympic baseball venue, there may be more interest in keeping baseball as an olympic sport from other nations.

I personally would prefer that the U.S. go back to all amateurs in all venue's, regardless of what the rest of the world is doing. This includes Hockey and Basketball.
