TBR Interview---Ryan Wilson

We are doing something a little different on our forum. This is the slow time of the baseball year and what a better way to fill this period than with a personal interview from some of the best seniors in the state of North Carolina.

Ryan Wilson is a State Games catcher from West Rowan. Ryan is considered one of the best catchers in the State and we are pleased that he took the time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions for us.

1. Congratulations on your signing at WCU. What made you decide to sign there?

I chose WCU mainly because it looked like I'd be playing DII baseball, and DII just wasn't the goal I had set for myself years back. Also, the people and the players, they were just down to earth. The coaches were up front and eager for me to be there and the players didn't treat me like a young recruit. While I was there I was a part of Catamount baseball, the fraternity on campus everyone wanted to be a part of.

2. Although you lost Link this year, West Rowan returns nearly everyone else. In your opinion, who are some of the new guys that need to step up at WR?

Well, the new guys on the varsity squad are very few. The only open spot on the field seems to be 2nd base. I look for my fellow senior, Winston Horton, to step up and take what he's been working at for 3 years. Also, our East Rowan transfer, Craig Beasley, should step into that new left handed void in our pitching rotation and get some quality middle relief out of him.

3. You have worked hard to make yourself one of the best catchers in the state. What advice would you give a young catcher moving up to varsity?

My advice to a young catcher on varsity would be to show no fear and no emotion. Also, don't lead by word of mouth but by your play and actions on the field. Young catchers should keep in mind that for a young 14 or 15 year old to catch 18 year olds is a huge leap, but also they should remember they're legit, or they wouldn't be there.


4. Who has had the biggest influence on your baseball career?

My dad! I wouldn't be the player, the man, or the person I am without him. But I don't want to go without mentioning my mom. I don't think either of us would be men without her support. God bless them both.

5. The best player you have played with and why?

The best player I have ever played with is Patrick Adams. As my peer, he has all my due respect. He might not have a tremendous amount of athletic ability, but he has a tremendous work ethic and knowledge of the game. As well as one hell of an arm.

6. Hobbies?

My hobbies are duck hunting, eating, and women, when time allows.

7. Favorite food?

My favorite food is "good" fried chicken.

8. Favorite movie?

My favorite movie would have to be "Bull Durham".

9. The most fun you have ever had?

I have fun everytime I get behind the plate. It's just my escape from this sometimes horrific world.
