This is an extension to HS Softball thread started by Cheese.
Since we are seeing less players coming into HS ball willing and able to play I suggest each poster go out and find a Rec league team to coach.
Think about it. If each one of us were to give 4 hours a week toward helping younger players develop good fundamentals how many "players" we could produce.
I personally am going to volunteer to help a local rec. team.
    Will anyone else step up?

    Great idea FPD

I have been doing just that for years along with HS, MS and my TB team.
It is very rewarding and fun.

I've been coaching for years too.
What I'm talking about is taking on a team that you're DD isn't on.
All fresh faces, bright eyes, and bushy tails.
I did this a couple years ago with a T-ball team. The Angier Rec. league team had 70 children sign up and 3 parents said they could coach.
My youngest was 12 at the time. I agreed to get the team started. It took just a couple weeks for the parents to realize that they could get involved. Several of those players are already shaping up into ball players and those parents who got involved are coaching now.

    Great idea!!

The city rec league actually would benefit even more if you were to train the coaches as well as the kids. Even for the ones who don't need training it at least puts everyone on the same track.

There are lots of opportunities to help everywhere. Some of the schools also need volunteers. Especially if you don't have a kid on the team. I know there are lots of jv positions.

Maybe you could start a thread for available positions.

I think you may have started something really good!

i will go to the middle schools, especially york chester which has only won 1 game in last three years. my dd is going to try and help with organizing a few demo games at the elementary level. most of our hs coachs do rec teams during the summer, some of my senior girls are coaching at the younger level. these things need to do done, and its on our shoulders to keep the interest of fastpitch high and the future of the game steady.

    great thread

    Sign me up....

After coaching high school for the last 10 years or so I have come to realize that teaching the basics to the younger girls is the most important way to help the high school. My wife and I started working with 12U girls that play rec ball together in the summer and we take them on to play travel ball in the fall. It has paid huge dividends at the middle school already and we are looking forward to having these girls at the high school over the next few years.

It is a win win for everyone...the girls grow up under one system and they are able to feel comfortable when they enter the high school, thus making the transition easier for everyone.

    Weds Night 9/17/08

This is the 3rd year that we have done this as a team.
We have seen tremendous benefit as kids and rec ball coaches are being taught proper and safe mechanics.

    Weds Sept 17th, 2008
    630pm
    South Garner Park, Garner NC
Garner Area Youth Softball League (GAYSL)

I will be there with my Peace team to run a "practice" with all of the kids involved in the Fall league.

We will focus on low impact instruction in all areas.
    (Offense, Defense, Pitching, Catching)

We also do a coaches camp to insure proper mechanics and warm up
    procedures...

Any travel ball coaches in the Triangle area that want to participate.
    Come on down...

We are also scheduled to be at West Raleigh little league and Wilders Grove Youth Center during the Fall season.
