this all makes my head hurt!

why not, after ball 4, have the catcher "look" the runner at third, then throw to the 1st baseman before the walked batter arrives. This would stop that runner, or get her out if she rounds the base as well as have the ball only 60' from home plate if the runner at 3rd tries to score... it would be almost like baiting her to go.

The kicker in your scenario is "pitcher attempted a play". Once that occurs there is no look back rule. As for throwing to 1st, it involves more chances for an error to be made. We have had great success in getting the runner called out at third by throwing quickly to the pitcher after the pitch. Then the pitcher stares down the batter/runner going to first. As soon as the runner on third breaks for home first baseman signals to pitcher who immeadiately turns around, does not make any attempt to throw the ball and freezes runner between third and home. If she stops or retreats she is out. If she continues toward home there is still enough time then to throw home for the tag. It is very much a timing play and you have to have great confidence in your pitcher and catcher being able to make the bang bang play that occurs. It is really sweet when it works though. I have seen some coaches furious over that play.

I really didn't watch the runner at third, other than seeing her go back to third. But I'm going to start watching that base runner alot closer now.

We have plays that deal with this situation and we have, on numerous occasions, gotten both runners out.

Coaches, with a runner on 3rd base, when, or why, would you use the continous walk? 1 out, 2 outs?

My question would be , why would you take the chance on continuing to 2nd with the ball already in the pitchers hand (already over halfway to 2nd). A 1st and 3rd situation is a better situation for the runner on 1st to advance to 2nd on the next pitch when the catcher has to throw some 85 feet to 2nd. Unless the defense has a pick play set up for the runner on 3rd the runner will score every time the ball is thrown 85 feet then 85 feet back home.

.....the runner at 3rd will get gunned down trying to pull that crap in most 18u TB games. I will say that the kid at 3rd can score, and does score, even in college. Been there seen that.
Please allow your Fishfriend to offer up these:

    1. With a runner on 1b and 3b, what pitch might come to your next batter?
Would the def. expect a steal, therefor, offering up a meatball fastball to your batter, and would you have the take sign on?
Would you as the coach be taking the bat out of your batters hands if you gave her the take sign, the 1b stole 2nd, and now with an open base at 1st, the defense might not want to pitch to your stud batter and just walk her.
    2. How smart is the other coach?
    3. How fast are the runners on base?
    4. How smart are the runners on base?
    5. Has the pitcher been throwing Ks at will and maybe this is your chance to create something?
    6. With the bases loaded, and the force play on, and your next batter is not having a good day.
    7. The catcher is pissed at the ump, and is more interested in letting him know that with her attitude than playing her game.

    ..........I love this game.
