"MARS HILL, NC - Mars Hill College's softball team swept Montreat College Sunday afternoon by scores of 8-1 and 5-0. The Lions improved to 23-11 while the Cavaliers fell to 4-13 on the season.
Game 1: MHC 8, MC 1
After Montreat scored a single run in their first at bat, Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, SC) hit a three-run homerun in the bottom half of the inning to give MHC a 3-1 lead they would maintain the remainder of the contest. The Lions added five insurance runs in the third frame on four hits and one Montreat error. The inning was highlighted by two-RBI single from Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, NC).
Harber went 3-for-4 at the plate with a homer, two runs scored and three RBI. Christa Fullwood (Wilmington, NC) had two hits in the win. Katie Blankenship (Candler, NC) threw a complete game to pick up her eighth win (8-1) on the season.
Game 2: MHC 5, MC 0
Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, NC) threw a complete game shutout to lead the Lions past Montreat 5-0 in the nightcap. Harber was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game two.
Huff had a double in the second inning to score one of the Lions' two runs in the inning and then Tiara Mitchell (North Charleston, SC) and Katie Bryden (Victoria, B.C.) each hit RBI singles in the fifth frame to extend the lead to 4-0. Harber then drove in Paige Brantley (Raleigh, NC) to end the scoring in the sixth inning.
Mitchell, Brantley and Bryden each tallied two hits to follow Harber. Farthing took her season record to 10-5 with the victory on the mound.
MHC will host North Greenville University on March 20. Game time is set for 2 p.m."
