Shopping for a bat (for a cub-league kid)

    My 18 cents.

    Ive always thought that it is much more important for kids starting out in baseball to use a lighter bat.

    Reasoning is that he/she can learn the swing then develop strength and power much later. Much later.

    However I think you can get to lite a bat if the kid is a bigger kid. Lots of times I see bigger kids swinging much shorter and liter bats which they overpower and don't learn mechanics.

    I would try several different weights and lengths. No need to go out and drop big dollars at this point. Get some used bats and let him/her try them out.

    Also in a couple of years I would get a wood bat to start working with. But only use it sparingly. Let them work out the mechanics using the lighter metal bats then gradually bring them along with wood bats. I think this helps them groove the mechanics a little better.

    Oh yeah. By the way keep it all fun. It really is just a game.

    And Always Always just play catch.
