CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Scott Jackson has been named an assistant baseball coach, the school announced Tuesday afternoon. Jackson, who joins the Tar Heels after one season at Liberty, will work with the offense, including hitting and base running, as well as infield play. He also will serve as Carolina’s recruiting coordinator.

“I am excited to welcome Scott, his wife Sara and their young son Ryan to our staff,” said Fox. “Coach Jackson brings a wealth of experience to our program in all areas of the game. He has a reputation of being a very hard worker, a relentless recruiter and having a great rapport with the players. He is a great person, is passionate about coaching and really wanted to be at Carolina. Scott is a great addition to our staff.”

“I’m thrilled to be working at the best University in the country, with the best baseball team in the country and with two guys in Coach Fox and Coach Forbes that are not only great coaches but great people,” said Jackson. “This job is a dream come true for me. When I started coaching 10 years ago, this is the job that I would have handpicked for myself at this point in my career. I’m excited, my family is excited, and we can’t wait to get to Chapel Hill and get rolling.

“A program is all about its players, and I am excited to work with the best players in the country. I look forward to teaching them and learning from them at the same time.”

Jackson has served as pitching coach at Liberty and UNC Wilmington over the last six years but has worked with hitters in coaching stops at Campbell, Barton and Wofford. He also served as head coach of the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League in 2002 and earned the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

Last season at Liberty, Jackson helped guide the Flames to a 35-26-1 record and a runner-up finish in the Big South Tournament to Cary Super Regional participant Coastal Carolina. Two of his pitchers were chosen in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, and his staff recorded a school record 508 strikeouts.

Under Jackson’s tutelage, six UNC Wilmington Seahawk pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft after going undrafted out of high school. His pitching staff established a number of school records at Wilmington, including strikeouts and saves.

Jackson also had coaching stints at Campbell (2002), Barton (2001) and Wofford (2000). In addition to his collegiate work, Jackson spent two seasons with the Wilmington Sharks, where he was an assistant to fellow North Carolina assistant Scott Forbes in 2000. He led the Sharks to a league-best 31-17 mark in 2002 as head coach and coached five MLB draft picks, including current Cleveland Indian Tom Mastny.

Jackson is a 1998 graduate of Campbell with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and he earned a master’s degree in education in 2000, also from Campbell. During his playing days with the Camels, he played seven different positions and posted a career .268 batting average in 182 games.

Funny thing is that it does not say he is the pitching coach. Maybe they are going to add to staff?

That's the thing..they have a hitting coach, too! But, a great recruiter is worth his weight no matter what he coaches. The minute a coach gets lazy and believes his school will sell itself is the day the program starts slipping. It appears they have an excellent addition to their staff.

Forbes was not a pitching coach before he went to uncch, he had always been a hitting coach. Fox apparently goes after good coaches without regard to their usual area of expertiese.
