Situation: A batter hits the ball on the ground through the 1B/2B hole to RF. The RF bobbles the ball before making the throw to 1B (trying to throw out the batter/baserunner). Because of the bobble, the baserunner is safe.

Is an error charged to the rightfielder?

    Routine?

My basis for whether or not this would be scored a hit or error is, would the play from right field to first be considered routine, or would it be considered a play that would take above and beyond effort. I would say that 99.9% of the time this play, as you describe it, would be a hit for the batter, and not an error on the right fielder.

    Not a scorekeeper but...

...I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! :)

I would think it is a judgement call on the scorekeeper. If they believe that with reasonable effort the RF would/could have gotten her out at first (without bobbling the ball), E-9. If there was no chance to get her out no matter what, hit!

thats a tough call.. if you are going to throw a girl out at first as a RF'r you have to approach picking the ball up in a "do or die" manner as its called as if there is a play at the plate... off to the side and running in... then a crow hop and a throw. Much like you cannot assume a DP in scorekeeping I dont think you can assume a RF'r throwing out a runner at first.

    Nope !!

It's a hit already passed through 2 defensive players, if thrown out it's an out, but the odds are in the baserunners favor !!

So is it different if it is a weak fly ball that drops in front of the RF, assuming she could not catch it with reasonable effort so no error, but then bobbles it and could have possibly thrown out the girl at first? Is that a hit or error?

Sorry for changing the premise of the thread a little.

    HIT

IMHO FPitch is correct ! :iagree:And (as much as it hurts to say), Guru hit the nail on the head. Fly ball? Could she have made the catch in the air - then, if she puts a glove on it - E? Untouched, Once it hits the ground - it's a hit if the runner makes it to 1st.
