First let me begin by relaying the gratitude from this young man's mother. You guys have been great and she has really enjoyed reading your comments and advice.

From what I have gathered, Mom and son are going to set up several unofficial visits and to see if they can get any idea of the interest level from these schools. The Mom isn't comfortable in discussing the offer the son has on the table with other schools, but based on the advice given here, I think she needs to let these other coaches know the situation they are dealing with. Is that correct?

One scenerio the Mom brought up was something that I would have never considered. She is concerned that if a coach from another school isn't quite ready to make an offer (due to it being so early) would a coach try to string them along until this coach had a better opportunity to evaluate this young man this summer and also to keep the coach who made the offer from getting the verbal? (I told the Mom she needs to stop worrying about and over analyzing things like this and just go visit some other schools so they will have more info to base a decision on.) But, she does bring up an interesting point about recruiting ethics.

The Mom had two other questions. First, if a kid commits and signs with a school, then the coach leaves that school, does the kid have to sit out a year if he transfers. I know this is the case in D-1 football and basketball, but how about baseball?

Also, is it appropiate for the kid to ask to sit in a class at a school? Is this allowed and do you guys recommend doing this?

Again, thanks for your thoughts and input.

Transfer rules are different in baseball than in football/basketball.

A player may ask for and receive a one-time exception from the AD for a transfer that allows him to change schools at the same level (D1-D1 ... etc) without sitting out a year. Normally, these releases are given when you desire to change schools except within a conference. If you transfer within a conference, you may have to sit out (depends on the school policy).

Another school cannot talk to you about acceptance, scholarships, etc UNTIL YOU OBTAIN YOUR RELEASE.

    Homer3,

My personal opinion is that she shouldn't share the details, but assuming these are schools he is more interested in she wouldn't be out of line saying you have a great offer from another school and leave it at that. The bottom line is if they have a need and percieve this young man can fill this need, the school will make an effort to learn more about him.

Yes, that can happen. After all, it is what she and her son are looking to do to the school making this offer by asking the Coach to extend his offer. They are trying to keep their options open.

The bottom line is that this boy obviously is luke warm about the school he has an offer from. Now he has to work quickly to see if the schools he does have an interest in are similiarly interested in him. Time for some unofficial visits and phone calls from his coach to the schools. The calls from the coach might reveal some valuable insight as to their true interest level.

My advice again is he needs to visit the offer schools he is interested in and talk with coaches. Get a feel for those schools and their needs and how he may or may not fit in to their needs. Does he still want to go to MYFAVORITE UNIV. if they have an all-conference sophmore at his most logical playing position? Will he struggle academically at MYFAVORITE UNIV.

Here's a question from deep left field, and I mean no disrespect to his ability as I have no idea who we're trying to help here. But are you sure he is capable of playing at the schools he is more interested in. Seek a variety of opinions on this matter, coaches not directly involved with him such as other well respected coaches in your conference, or coaches on other legion teams. Well my point is if you are going to run the risk of passing up a good thing make sure your other hopes and wishes are based on reality.

    Good Luck to him.

based on the advice his high school coach gave him about taking the offer and backing out if something better came along, i am not sure you want him (hs coach) making many phone calls for the kid. he may be giving and getting bad info both ways. *****
