SE wins 3A Western Regional 2-0. Good ball game but SE made it look easy. Mid Piedmont conference goes back to the state championship.

    I'll post a recap in a few

That's who I thought would make it. Anybody can ask the Butler crowd for their opinions about Ashley. They have already played them.

okay it was a few hours not a few minutes by well worth the wait I hope...

    SE Guilford 101 203 X 7 7 0
    RS Central 010 000 0 1 7 2

    W - Jody Hackett
    L - Ryan Arrowood

I missed the Hilltoppers half of the first so my stats may be a little off. But what I saw was a good game that was ultimately dominated by Southeast. Jody Hackett who was a surprise starter ( for me anyway, I figured they would go with ace #2 Cam Cockman), pitched the game of his life, scattering seven hits while striking out at least 11, including striking out six over the last two innings.

SE took a 1-0 lead in the first as a two out single by Jeff Medley drove in Ben Areno who was on second after his single and a walk to Austin Moyer. RS Central tied it up in the second after as Will Henderson led off with a double, followed by a Keith Snethen single and was driven in on a two out Billy Barnard single. But that was all the damage RS would do tonight.

Arrowood didn’t pitch badly but he looked tired to me. He gave up a run in the third as his defense let him down allowing Moyer to reach on a high pop to left that dropped between the LF, 3B and SS for a double. A sac fly moved him to third then Moyer scored on a wild pitch/passed ball. The throw was actually in time and Arrowood made a good tag but Moyer kicked the ball out of his glove.

Arrowood was chased after getting two strikeouts to lead off the fourth, but an infield single by Justin Venable was followed by a line drive homer over the right field wall by Areno. Arrowood gave up 5 hits, 3 walks, hit a batter and struck out four in 3.2 IPs. Eli Russo pitched that last 2.1 and looked good, striking out 2 and walking one, giving up two hits. But the two hits and walk were in the 6th as a Jody Hackett lead off walk, was followed by a Justin Ransom pinch single. Then with two outs and two big swinging strikes to Austin Moyer, Moyer connected big time blasting a three run homer to the deepest part of center field.

Hackett came in throwing strikes harder than ever and actually struck out the side, but Arrowood reached on a passed ball third out, third strike, (more on that later). Ben McCurry followed with a single (his third hit of the night) and a walk to Jared Guffey to load the bases. Hackett stayed in and got JP Conner to ground out to end the game.

McCurry led RSC with three hits. Moyer was 2-3 with a walk, DB, HR 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored – wonder this junior is looking at – he’s a great player. Ben Areno was 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBIs.

Now for that Arrowood, strike out/passed ball. It was on a 1-2 count. Hackett threw one that bounced at least two feet in front of the plate for what should have been ball two. But Arrowood lunged at it and since that was strike three got to advance to first before the catcher could get to the ball and throw him out. Seems like that is a cheap play where the batter shouldn’t be allowed to advance. Smart play by Arrowood to make though if it was in the rules.

Anyway – great ball game by the Falcons – hope they bring a title back to Greensboro. Thanks for all you that read through that long winded recap.

    NL wins Series

    NL 7
    Whiteville 3

    Starter: John Alpin
    WP: #10 -
    LP: Penny 6 2/3 innings pitched, 8 or 9 K's, 7 runs.
    Reliever: Wright 1 1/3, 2 reached on errors, 2 K's

Whiteville up 3-2 for a couple of innings but a few hits and errors in the field quickly put NL up 7-3. Then Sowers came into the game in the sixth inning and shut the door. Only one runner reaching base on a walk and nothing else.

NL shortstop (I think it was Bryce Grady) made two outstanding plays, tagging out a base stealer and turning a double play. Oh yeah, the catcher (Tyler Smith) has a cannon....be careful on the stealing.

No stats kept tonight, wanted to enjoy the last game without the worrying about keeping every pitch count. I think Brandon Sutton had the most hits for NL as the lead off batter.

Whiteville had an outstanding run this year and they should be very proud of their accomplishments...I wished it didn't have to end for the seniors but it's time to move on. Good luck to the seniors going off to college.

Whiteville should have a good team again next year....five starters will be returning.

CB Aycock advances to 3A State Finals by beating Northern Nash 10-0 in 6 innings. One night after NN hit 4 homers to down Aycock 9-0, the tables were turned as Aycock popped 4 homers of their own. Aycock's Garrett Davis struck out 11 while allowing but 3 hits. I really didn't expect a series with two lopsided games. The difference in this series was the Aycock pitchers being much more rested than Northern's(IMO). Northern's Zach Woodley, and Tyler Joyner really stepped their game up the last 3 weeks of the season even though the results of THIS series may not indicate such.
