I thought you Northern Mecklenburg and Iredell county parents and players may be interested:

UNC-Asheville Recruiting Coordinator/Pitching Coach Tim Perry Will be speaking at Hopewell Monday January 22nd at 6:30pm.

Coach Perry will be discussing topics related to recruiting for all baseball divisions as well as academic requirements and qualification for the NCAA Clearing House. The Meeting will be held in the Hopewell Auditorium and a donation of $ 10.00 per family is requested.

Coach Perry will also be available for questions and answer sessions following the seminar. Coach Perry has experience at all levels of baseball; including collegiate player, collegiate coach, camp instructor, professional umpire and division 1 baseball recruiting coordinator. I went to the recruiting seminar on Monday night and wanted to check in and give a short summary. UNC-A’s Coach Perry is a very knowledgeable person regarding college baseball recruiting and he talked and answered questions for approximately 2 hours. I will say that it was or would be a great educational experience for the parents of 9th, 10th and 11th graders (possibly 8th graders) that feel their son has a shot at or want to play college baseball. Coach Perry discussed 5 areas of recruiting plus a few side items. A summary is as follows:

Who is Interested In Recruiting You?
Signs of interest, level of interest, offer of financial aid.

    What are Coaches Looking For?
5 tools, character, academics, projectability, positional needs, program fit.

Where and how do You Promote yourself and Get exposure?
Winter/summer camps, identifying quality showcases, identifying quality travel teams, Legion vs showcase/travel ball, the do’s and don’ts of promoting yourself/son, how to make a promotional video.

When should you start the Recruiting Process?
When the NCAA considers you a recruit, when you can begin emailing and unofficially visiting schools, when can coaches contact you, official visits, when to start your college search, importance of your Junior year.

Why are you interested in a School/Why choose a School?
Athletics, academics, social life, public vs private school.

In addition he discussed the odds of a High School Senior going on to play college ball and gave examples of how scholarship money is handed out. He also talked some about academic money supplements. I might have missed some things as he covered a lot. If they have it again next year, there was some side discussion on where there was interest for this to be an annual thing, it is well worth the time and the extremely low $10 donation.

I would encourage all families that have interest in having their son play college ball to attend these clinics. It will absolutely be the best return on your investment.

Gas- to drive to the event $10
    Cost of clinic- $10
To have a college coach explain in detail the recruiting process- priceless

The next time a parent of an underclassman is deciding how to spend their money; be it a Showcasing team, an event, camps or a hitting/pitching coach; there is no better time and financial investment then attending these type clinics.
