Playoff talk in the unifour

The majority of the high school football teams in area conferences now know whether they will enter the A or AA bracket in their classification for the state playoffs that begin on Nov. 14.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) released ADMs (average daily membership) figures on Friday. And although there's nothing more that can be determined this early, these are certainties:

> Any school that has an ADM in the top 32 of a classification will be in a "big" (AA) bracket in the playoffs.

> Any school that has an ADM in the bottom 32 of a classification will be in a "small" (A) bracket.

> Schools stuck in the middle of those ADM categories could go in either bracket, based on which schools qualify for the postseason, and who goes into East or West brackets can't be determined until the 64-team fields are complete.

Area teams from the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A-3A and Northwestern 4A that already know their fate, if they qualify for the playoffs, are: East Burke (4A), Fred T. Foard (3A), Freedom (4A) Hibriten (2AA), Hickory (3AA), McDowell (4AA), A.C. Reynolds (4A) St. Stephens (3AA) and Watauga (4A).Of those nine schools, only Freedom (3-7) does not yet have the required four wins to become playoff eligible.

Four schools -- Bandys, Maiden, Newton-Conover in 2A and South Caldwell in 4A -- are in limbo and could go into the "big" or "small" bracket based on which teams around the state qualify.Patton (3-7) does not yet have the needed four wins, but would get a 2AA berth if it qualified.
Alexander Central (2-7) needs two wins to become playoff eligible. If it does, it could go into the 4A or 4AA bracket based on which schools qualify.Bunker Hill (1-8) and West Caldwell (0-9) won't qualify for the postseason and Draughn did not field a varsity team this season.

Looks like, Newton, Bandys, St. Stephens, Hickory, South Caldwell, FT Foard, Maiden, East Burke and Hibriten will represent the Unifour in the Playoffs.
