Middle School Ball with a little twist to topic

I hear the parent and the concern for safety, which brought back a thought I had last year. We had two teams in our league that had established programs. The other teams lagged behind significantly in ability and coaching.

My big concern was for the opposing teams that were not ready to take care of themsleves on defense. Especially the pitchers! The opposing coach sends his or her team out on defense with no game masks and no mouth pieces! I saw the pitcher and catcher warming up in the bottom of the first and the pitcher could barely catch the throw back from the catcher. Our coach told our girls to lift the ball to the outfield to avoid opposing team injury.

If a girl would get hurt badly say from a line drive, how would it effect MS Softball? I really wish all the coaches had knowledge of the game to at least keep their girls safe with the proper protective gear.

We can't control how much or little or good or bad an area plays ball, but we can do the right thing and keep all the girls as safe as possible.

Love the game, thank goodness for travel ball, just my two cents!

I think the problem is that the coach for the MS team is really the football coach, and was probably made to coach the softball team. I have flat out told him not to use her for pitching practice and that she is not to pitch the entire double header. Ther are no other pitchers, but there is one that can at least get it over the plate in the strike zone. She loves to play, and on her TB team, there are 2-3 other pitchers that share the time. It works for her, and it works for me. They all have about the same level of ability and like to share the mound with each other. I hate we have let the TB coach down by getting her worn out in MS ball, because that is her first love. Her pitching coach actually wants to do a study on the effects of pitching because like you said just because you throw underhanded does not mean there will be no ill effects if it is overused. Thanks for all the great comments and hopefully she will stop having pain over the next few weeks. She has been told not to pitch for about 3 more weeks but to work on some isometric exercises to keep the strength up in that arm.
