Lincolnton jumped out to a 22-6 lead at the half and appeared to be on cruise control as they set their sights on Chapel Hill but the Brevard Blue Devils were'nt done fighting yet. What resulted was one of the best high school football playoff games I've ever witnessed. Lets set the stage.....

Brevard began the game with a pooch kick and gave the Lincolnton Wolves great field position but held on downs and the Wolves had to punt. The kick was downed inside the Blue Devil 1 yard line. Two plays later Brevard fumbles and the Wolves convert it into a touchdown and tack on a two point conversion to lead 8-0. Brevard turned the ball over again on a fumble at the Lincolnton 33 yd. line. CJ Wilson ran 36 yds. on 3rd and 5 to the Brevard 24 to set up a 21 yd. pass from Zach Gibson to Demery Brewer to push the score to 15-0. It seemed as if Brevard got a huge break when a high snap on a Wolves punt gave them the ball at the Lincolnton 19. But the Blue Devils were stopped on 4th and goal from the 2 to squash that scoring opportunity. Lincolnton got a 75 yd. pass play to Brewer on first down but they fumbled the ball away on the next play......end of the first quarter.
Brevard came up with their own defensive gem as they stopped Lincolnton on 4th down. Thats when their power running attack came to life as they drove the length of the field (aided by a 15 yd. personal foul) and when Blue Devil RB Elliot pushed in from 2 yds. out they were back in it. But they went for 2 and failed. 15-6 Wolves. After the ensuing kickoff, Lincolntons CJ Wilson ran 57 yds. on the first play from scrimmage to the Brevard 3 and QB Zach Gibson sneaks it in on 3rd and goal.....22-6 at the half.

The third quarter was dominated by both defenses as Brevard was stopped on 4th down at the Wolves 32. Then Brevards' Robinson picks off a Gibson pass at the Wolves 44. But Brevard is stopped again on 4th down at the Lincolnton 30. Lincolnton stalls and is stopped on a fake punt from their own 32 and Brevard converts it into a touchdown as Blue Devil QB Frisbee hit WR Connelly for a 32 yd. strike but another 2 point attempt fails........22-12. As both teams traded punts, Lincolnton has the ball deep in their own end of the field at their 19 yd. line..........thats where the game seemed to get away from them. Wolves QB Gibson throws a pick, under heavy pressure from the Blue Devil defensive front, and #77 returns it for a touchdown and as the third quarter comes to and end the lead has shrunk for Lincolnton.......22-19

The fourth quarter was full of big plays and Lincolntons' CJ Wilson proved to be Mr. Prime Time. But penalties hurt the Wolves badly as an 84 yd. catch and run by Wilson is called back on a delay of game and the Wolves had to punt. Brevard got the ball on the Wolves 38 but they're forced to punt. Lincolnton got the ball at their 17. Another long touchdown, an 82 yd. catch and run by Wilson is called back on a holding penalty and the Wolves are forced to punt from their own end zone. Brevard got the ball on the Wolves 27, converted a 4th and 2 from the Lincolnton 19 and Elliot rams one in from the 4 yd. line to put Brevard on top 26-22 with 2:55 left to play. Thats when CJ Wilson broke the hearts of the Brevard faithful as he ran 76 yds. on a swing pass for the game clincher as shoddy tackling hurt the Blue Devils. Brevard got down to the Lincolnton 36 but was stopped on 4th down and 5 and the Wolves ran off the remaining time.

    Final score 29-26

CJ Wilson is stone cold MONEY! Credit Brevard for hanging tough on the road and coming from behind. GREAT GAME!
