    2 Questions...

    1. Man on second less than 2 outs. Ground ball to short, runner decides to break for third. Shortstop fields the ball cleanly, makes a good throw trying to throw the man out at third, but the runner beats the throw and is safe.
Is the batter credited with a hit as their was no out or error made on the FC?

    2. Routine pop fly between third baseman and shortstop. Both start to call the ball, and then both back off the ball thinking the other one was going to catch it and the ball falls right between them.
    Who gets the error - 5 or 6 ?

    Official scorer

    1. no base hit just a fielders choice ruling

    2. scorers judgement on who gets error per rule BUT most team scorers are going to end up giving the batter a cheap hit

In scenario one, remember that there does not need to be an out recorded to have a fielders choice. (Maybe it was not a very good choice.)

You should also look at the possibility that if the ball was hit into the hole, with the SS’s momentum heading towards third, would he been able to reasonably stop and make a throw that would be strong enough to get the batter out. If you rule that, that play could not be reasonably made, you could then award a base hit even though the SS made an attempt at 3B. It would be the same as if he fielded the ball cleanly and put it in his pocket because he had no play.

In scenario two, you need to score the play an error if the ball should reasonably be caught. I most likely would aware the error to the SS because the 3B should back off if the SS calls him off.

While it is not true in every case and based upon each teams personell, generally when calling for fly balls, an OF is dominate over an IF, the CF is dominate over the corner OF, the SS is dominate over the other IF, an IF is dominate over the Catcher and Pitcher. At least that is a starting point for the scoring.

    Rare triple play

How can a team get 3 outs on one play without the defense ever touching the ball after the pitch is thrown and the batter hits it?

    1. Batter hit by a batted ball in fair territory.
    2. Runner hit by batted ball in fair territory.
    3. Runner interference.
