Having recently been involved in the recruiting process with my son and having experienced it myself in the dark ages, I am amazed at how early teams are now making decisions on players.

I just ran across this information about some early commitments at USC.

"The USC baseball program has picked up commitments for the next two signing classes, and both prospects come from Hillcrest High School. According to the Greenville News, junior OF/P Evan Goldberg and sophomore OF Nick Cassidy have made their pledges to the Gamecocks."

When you consider that the sophomore mentioned has not even played his sophomore season yet, this means he has three more seasons of high school ball before he can play at USC. Don't you think this is a tad early?

There is a lot of water that will pass under the bridge in the next three years. This kid must be special.

Yes, it is....but if the school is interested and obviously the player really wants to go there, that's great. I personally have questions about this, but if USC honors their commitment then great for Coach Tanner.

But dang...a sophomore? That sends my radar up

Nick played for the Upstate Mavericks 15U team this past year, who finished 4th in the AAU Nationals. He is for real. Got all the tools. Only problem for USC is that he was also the starting QB for Byrnes high school as a soph. and has great promise in that sport also.

    wow...

i was thinking a 2006 at this time to give a verbal commitment to USC before his jr. season was a little too early...and now USC is verbally commiting 2007's?

From what I was told, USC is his 'dream school'. He attends their camps and they liked what they saw. But like I said, probably will wind up as a QB.

Sophomore? Little early to be making any kinid of commitments if you ask me, but hey I am old and decrepid and aging faster. I am pasting a response I made in the college basketball forum about that kid, a jr in high school making a verbal to UNC.....I think this is somewhat related, though I know college/pro baseball is different than the college/pro basketball routes....

""Why don't they let him go ahead and committ, you know kind of the NBA hardship thing and let him go ahead and "attend", I mean shoot in a few years they will be coming out of jr.high committing to schools or even better skipping high school all together and going straight in anyway. Who needs an edumakashun any way?""
