I didn't know it was a rule but the times I have thought about taping it didn't feel quite ethical so I didn't.

Of course, if I had a DD playing and I wanted to tape her I don't believe that would fall under that rule and I don't believe it could be enforced if it did.

I believe the intent of the taping would be the issue as to whether it violated the rule or not.

The only logical explaination is to protect the umpires from constant protests on bad calls, and the calling of a pitch a ball, that measures two balls off the plate, a strike. I can not see any difference between a coach or coaches scouting a game, or video taping for scouting purposes.

    Videotaping

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the umpires. It is put in so that no "Non-participating team can videotape an opponents games and gain an unfair advantage from possibly picking up signs or any other important information. A parent taping their daughter in these contest is perfectly legal. Now some might say, "what if the parent gives the tape to their coach?" Then you just have to say that if someone wants to cheat or circumvent the rules bad enough, they will find a way. Please remember, that these are still high school kids, in a high school sport, that is supposed to be for skill improvement and character development. So showing them that it is ok to set aside certain rules or morals, just to win, is what tears at the very fabric of developing a functioning adult in society

Thanks for clearing that up. Nice reminder too for all those coaches out there who forget about the example they somtimes set at games.

    something else you said

But isn't that all part of scouting a team? Learning what you can about your opponent and devise a game plan? Getting an edge? Coaches pick off signals all the time during games. What is the big deal if they do it during a game or watch it on video tape? Even the players steal signals. And even if someone does steal a signal, what is the guarnatee the play will be properly executed? Anyway, rules are rules. But that was a good idea about having a parent video tape a game.
