There is a good discussion going on over on the HSBBW about how some coaches are now getting the screen names of players they may be interested in and catching them online and chatting with them. Seems like today with text messaging, and instant messaging coaches now have found a work around to get to the players outside of NCAA restrictions. With this on the rise, it may benefit those going thru the recruiting process now to know it may happen with their son and how they will address it.

In some of the responses, it is even suggested that it may very well not be the coach, but instead players who are acting like the coach and gathering info for him. Then again it could just be kids doing it as a prank.

I am very glad my son is over and done with all of this because with advancements in technology, who knows what the next form of communication might be! :yikes:

    supposition

Very interesting about the IM'ng - gonna have to check that out.

Logically thinking, however, IMHO an IM is just about the same thing as a telephone call, the only difference is no one is actually using their voice (I guess unless your computer has voice recognition ability). Seems to me like this would be something the NCAA would want to look into quickly. I mean, it's pretty much the same thing as TDD for the deaf.

BB9er is right, keeping up with the technology and how it impacts recruiting could get to be a nightmare. Especially as phones are now coming equipped with IM-type capabilities.:thud:

Braves your right .... (had to pause for a moment) they need to close it. But they might be like me and are still trying to figure it out. I can see the committee sitting at the conference table dicussing it and whether it is meant to be spelled IM or is it a typo and the apostophe was left out of "I'm". Half the committee then launches in to a dicussion of making sure the Clearinghouse has enough English courses required for eligibility while the other half votes to set up a sub-committee to do some fact finding.

The NCAA has done a lot of good things ....................(had to take a longpause after saying that), but I'm not sure their known for their progressive, nimble thinking. Odds are there will be some new technology out there before the pass legislation to restrict this loop hole.

They have thought about it ... this is from the NCAA handbook for coaches ..

The difficulty that I have from the students viewpoint for using "IM" is that the person who is representing themselves as a "coach" may in fact be an athletic supporter or booster of the college/university. It that is the case, then you have a recruiting violation that would prohibit the student-athlete from ever competing at that institution.

    NCBaseball:

I'll have to take back some of what I said :umno:

NCBaseball, that's certainly quite possible and unfortunately probable.:agreed: Many a school and player have run into eligibililty issues over Booster-Fan involvement. And at times the illegality was with the best of intentions.
