Butler varsity boys and girls loses to Garinger.
    Both games were close.
Boys lost a heartbreaker on a buzzer beater. 61 -60.
Butler had the lead with 6 seconds left and Maurice Mcmillan on the line with a 1 and 1. Score at that time was 60-59 Butler.
Mo missed the front end and Garinger got the rebound and raced down the court , blew by the defender and made a contested layup as time expired.

    HERE'S THE STORY

    Garinger nips Butler with buzzer-beater
Wildcats still tied for Southwestern 4A lead
    MICHAEL WILKINS
    Special Correspondent

The Garinger boys' basketball team has surprised a lot of people with its success this season. The Wildcats had one more surprise left in them Tuesday.

Corey Farmer's basket as time expired lifted Sweet 16 No. 7 Garinger to a 61-60 comeback victory against visiting Butler.

The Wildcats trailed by one with seven seconds left when Butler missed the front end of a one-and-one. Farmer grabbed the rebound and raced downcourt, lofting a shot that rattled around the rim before falling in, setting off a wild celebration.

"We don't give up. We don't quit," said Wildcats coach James Davis. "I'm watching that time on the clock and I know that there's still enough time in that game to win if the right things happen."

Farmer finished with 13 points. Jerry Hollis also had 13 and Marcus Robinson scored 10 off the bench for the Wildcats (13-2, 10-1).

Garinger remains tied for first in the Southwestern 4A with South Mecklenburg, a 58-52 winner against Waddell on Tuesday.

The Wildcats trailed 22-11 after one quarter. Butler's lead grew to 14 in the second half. Garinger held Butler to seven points in the final period, overcoming several missed opportunities to take the lead in the closing minutes.

Maurice McMillan scored 20 points, Jeremy Glover had 14 and Mantoris Robinson 10 for Butler (14-7, 7-4), the reigning Southwestern 4A regular-season champion.

"I'm not surprised (at our success) because I've observed how hard these guys have worked at practice," Davis said. "It paid off tonight because we were able to play hard down the stretch."
