Personally I want the bigger field. Give me 330 down the line with 380 or more in center field with around 40 to the backstop for high school ball. Down the line is the important thing. Less than 320 and good pitches and routine outs turn into home runs.

As for basepaths, dirt or grass - just keep them well groomed.

The Homer Dome King in the Winston Salem area has to be West Forsyth. 300 down the line & not much more in left center. Coach Pope did build a higher fence, but it's still a short porch.

Coach 27, the field with no fence ...... you forgot to mention that is the home of the left fielder who sits at his position the entire game, and the ground rules are: 1-ball rolls into the woods=double, 2- ball reaches the woods in the air=Home Run. One of the most entertaining games i've ever seen.

    slightly off topic

    but not really either

has anybody been to duke's field. exactly how far is it from the plate to the back stop. i've got plenty of kids that can't even foul a pitch off outta there. its huge.

    uk7,
you are right about it being a short porch. but i have done research on this... we have hit more homeruns on the road the past 7 years than we have at home. even though it is short the ball doesn't fly very well there. i would like to see a comparison of homeruns hit at west to those at the rest of the schools in conference. i would almost bet there is as many if not more hit at davie and north. it is almost a weapon becasue so many people think they can hit it out there and swing for the fence, turning into a "pop up pete"
i would say there is only one or 2 "west Forsyth" homeruns hit there a year.

as far as the grass in the basepaths, as keeper of the field i like it. less straight lines to keep up, less lips to deal with. as a fan i probably like the dirt basepaths. have not had a problem wit the grass baselines wearing out or rutting up.

when we put up our brick wall and net backstop we moved the backstop from 80 feet to 45 feet. now it is a normal distance. wish we had more seating only 3 of the normal bleachers but PLENTY of room for chairs on the hill.

do you prefer a fence in front of dugouts or just leave that area open like college/ pro dugouts?
