Of the many things for which I give thanks, I am most thankful that my son has the opportunity to fulfill his dream of playing college baseball at the school of his choice.

I am also thankful for the many people with whom I have had the pleasure of meeting through my involvement in baseball. Baseball people are some of the most unique in the sports world in that baseball people are always willing to share the lessons they have learned with others. This willingness to share is the tie that binds us.

    Happy Thanksgiving and be safe!

    A Thanksgiving via Baseball

From distant pastures of sub consciousness to glistening fields of virgin recollection, I am grateful for the memories of the game we love.

So, on Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for:

    • Pete Sandman, who wrote for the local weekly paper in my small hometown with the same enthusiasm as the Tiger’s beat writer – making those local boys that graced Lockhart Field feel as if they were as special as Kaline, Cash, or McClain.
    • TBR and Braves whose positive promotion of today’s players is second to none. It is pretty cool for the dads and moms too.
    • Sonny Nye, of local legend fame who once hit a homer it is reported well over 550 feet. He asked me to join his American Legion team and gave me a chance to play only because I could run the 40 in 4.3, never mind I never played organized baseball before. For a couple of summers I had the opportunity play the game that I idolized as a seven year old in the yard with a wiffleball that would have never happened without him. Sonny passed this year at an all too young 59. He is missed.
    • Don Hutchins and the South Charlotte Panthers who gave my son and all that play with his organization year after year a chance to play across the country to showcase their talents and asks for nothing more from the kids than their best effort.
    • Dad, who is still the wisest coach I ever had and who had the toughest job – to coach his son without even the perception of bias, and mom who traveled for years without ever missing a contest, be it in Michigan, Texas, California, or Tennessee or anywhere in between. They were always supportive no matter how well or poorly I performed. So it was with their grandkids as well. God willing, it will not be too long before they have a chance to watch their great grandchild play.
    • Hal Bagwell & A.J. Wright at AK and other coaches around the state, who are driven to have one of the very best high school programs in the state and are willing to make the sacrifices to make it happen for the kids in their programs.
    • Tiger Stadium and my first professional game – a twinight double header versus the White Sox.
    • The USA Olympic Baseball Training center in Cary. Would it not be neat to see all the state championship games there?
    • The ’68 Tigers who help turn childhood affection into a lifetime passion. Running home from school as fast as I could to turn on the World Series. A Tigers Win!
    • The 2008 Rays who played with a youthful spirit that combined with talent into winning an AL pennant. Falling asleep trying to see what would happen as Bud made up the rules. A Rays win, oops.
    • An older son, who has a passion for the game and still works to keep improving though his playing days are now for enjoyment only with his club team.
    • A younger son, who never did much care for the game, did not particularly like being dragged to big brothers games, yet was upset if they lost. He has a heart of gold.
    • Their mother, who is a blessing and puts up with me being at a ball field, filling out scouting reports or on TBR for endless hours.
    • Thanksgiving when we think about how blessed we are. Time to start cooking; it is the boys’ mother’s day off.
    Happy Thanksgiving

My question is what concession satnd is Braves going to raid. Just the menu is pretty simple. Couple of hot dogs, peanuts and a drink. Maybe a Snickers for afterwards.

I cannot begin to name all that I am thankful for. I am so blessed, a wonderful family good friends, great kids to coach and most importantly the promise of eternal life through Christ.

Be thankful for all you have, you never know when it can be taken away.

    Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!!
