Grand Slam 23U loses to Stacy Nelson and the Va. Legends in Commonwealth Games Final

Wow.... what a weekend..

Grand Slam USA 23u finished 2nd in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, going 5-1 and losing the final against the Va. Legends and National team pitcher Stacy Nelson ( former Florida Gator).

Grand Slam was the only NC representative in the 11 team tournament that featured a who's - who of the current and former collegiate stars.

Faith Sutton ( ECU) was lights out on the mound with 24K in 17 innings of work. Anna Maness (Brenau) and Kalie Lang (NW Florida Juco) also had a win each and contributed well with their bats. Holly Berry (UNC-P) caught every inning and had a big 2 run RBI hit off Nelson in the championship. Whitney Williams (UNC-C) Kirstin Morris (NCSU) and Tonianne Williford (NCSU) were terrors to the opposing pitchers, as these 3 lefty's ran wild all weekend. Morgan Wright (Elon) provide a solid 3rd base and power in the middle of the lineup, with a big RBI in the win against the Va Renegades and Tenn pitcher Cat Hosfield. Sarah Forgacs (Campbell) played a solid LF and had a big hits off Hosfield and Nelson on Sunday. Niki Dobbins (HC Wake Tech) anchored CF and had a on base % of .545 ( 6/11) through the tournament. Jenna Rudder (Averett U) played solid defense in a Utility role and scored 2 runs. Katelyn Jones ( UNC-C) also contributed in a Utility role on Saturday.

After going 3-0 in pool play, we opened Sunday against the Wagner 23U from Maryland, which featured players from Va., Va-Tech (BK.. Cape Fear Storm), Pittsburgh, and Maryland. We scored 2 in the bottom of the 6th and held on to win 2-1.

Semi Final was against the Va. Renegades, host team of the tournament. Team consisted of players from Univ of Florida, Tennessee, Radford, Va-Tech, Wingate. We faced Univ of Tennessee soph Cat Hosfield, and squeezed out a 3-1 victory. Great defense and pitching got us through.

Final against the Legends was fun and a great experience for our kids.
Legends lineup consisted of National team pitcher Stacy Nelson, Megan Bush, Ga-Tech stars Holly Rush and Priebe, Holle from Florida to mention a few. Running on empty, we were quickly down 0-4, but scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first, after lead-off singles from Williams, Morris and Williford. Holly Berry's single plated 2, but that was all we could do against Nelson. Final 10-2

Everyone.... this is where you need to be.... Even with the loss, our girls knew they had made a mark for NC Softball.

How many times have you every seen your daughter play and lose in a championship game, and then get pictures taken with the pitcher that beat you.
