Here is a link to the Burke County Schools web site with some photographs of the Freedom football field in the flood. I couldn't capture them, but they are scrolling on the main page though.

I read on NCPreps that Pisgah's field was destroyed. Wiped out the scoreboard, concessions, goalposts, stands, messed up the turf. Sounds like they and others may have a tough time playing home games.

Freedom has this week off and they host Ashbrook next week, I don't think they'll be playing ball next friday night on the banks of the majestic Catawba River, as the Freedom PA man used to say.

WOW!!! I can't believe the amout of water covering the field. If that field is playable this year I will be amazed, can you imagine the sand and mud on the field under that water, and the amount of damage done to the field house! Good luck with that we are all praying for you.

I guess it's good Freedom IS off. I can't imagine that a lot of their equipment is usable now, much less the field. One thing about it, if the Freedom boosters are as good as some I've seen, that field might be playable next week. It's amazing what resources parents have when they want to help their kids.

I did hear that the coaches tried to get the equipment out but the electricity was still on and they couldn't get to it. The baseball field is right behind the football field and IT'S under water too.

Reynoldsrocks, how is your area. I heard that parts of Asheville got hammered pretty hard as well.

BigDan, you guys are OK at the top of the mountain I guess?

I know that we had ALOT of roads closed and the schools have been closed for a couple of days now. Lots of people without water and power, and Pisgah High School has said already they have lost their football field for the season. It's really been a total mess and I don't know how our field is holding up, but I doubt many if any games will be played Friday.

the flooding is the worst I have ever seen, a lot of people comparing it to 1977. The field here at McDowell held up fairly well. Being on top of a ridge, the chances of standing water anywhere near the magnitude of Freedom's situation is about none. But reguardless, there is standing water from just the rainfall. We have the week off and host RS Central next week, things should be fine, unless Ivan makes a call.

But not everybody got off as lucky. Northern half of the county got hit hard, Catawba River actually left its banks and had the Wal-Mart shopping center (down below MHS) with as much as 5 feet of water. HWY 70 was shut down until late afternoon yesterday. US 221 North at Mountain Paradise Campground is closed because the North Fork River took out a 100 foot section of 221. No telling when 221 will be reopened. Also a major mudslide on I-40 at the top of Old Fort Mountain. It may be 10 days before the road is completely open, right now one lane each direction is passable.
