Harold Gaines, often referred to as the "candyman" of umpires passed away late Tues night/early Wed morning. Mr. Gaines had umpired for many years in the Triangle area and would often be seen passing candy to fans, players, and coaches. He was a very nice man and a very solid umpire. He will be missed by many baseball players, coaches, and fans in the area. Please remember him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Here is the funeral arrangements for Harold. The visitation is this evening 6-8PM in Sanford NC and the funeral is tomorrow at 11AM.

Thanks for sharing this lefty. He is one umpire I wish I met. Anyone have their favorite story about the "Candyman"?

    Will be missed

I have had the pleasure to have Mr. Gaines umpire many of my games, always fair, and always had a pocket full of candy. He was always willing to hear everyone out, and seemed to know all players by their name. Harold umpired the first scrimmage of my senior year last Friday, he will be missed by all.
