    Suspicion of Cheating Clouds Little League Tournament

    (07/13/07 -- DURHAM) - Allegations of cheating are marring a little league baseball tournament in North Carolina.

    "I've not seen anything like this in the state of North Carolina," said Joe Zima, parent.
    The tournament features teams from across the area with the winner advancing to the next round of the Little League World Series. It's a dream the little leaguers spend years trying to achieve.
    The issue is coaches from several teams in Durham, Wilson and other towns say a Lee County team is cheating. They say the team is knowingly using a star player who doesn't even live in Lee County.
    "When you come into this playing field and find it's not fair, it's very frustrating," said Devon Hammonds, manager of Wilson County All-Stars.
    Hammonds' team lost to the team accused of using an ineligible player. Armed with documents he says can prove the team is cheating, he protested all the way up to Little League headquarters in Pennsylvania.
    "I found in my heart that there is an injustice being done right now," said Hammonds.
    Little League officials say there's not enough proof and for now, the Lee County team is still playing.
    Eyewitness News had the following exchange with the Lee County team coach:
    Tim Nelson: Can you explain your roster, I mean is it legitimate?
    Lee County Coach: Everything's legitimate.

    But other coaches don't believe that and remaining games will be played under a cloud of suspicion.
    Coaches for the team in question did not return Eyewitness News' calls for comment. The team plays again in a couple of hours. If the Lee County team wins, the losing team will file another protest.

    Looks like

    a repeat of history. Thought they had that addressed. Truth be known they need to revise the playing rules. At this age (12) most of these kids are playing higher levels of the game. They are bigger and use minus bats. Not sure when the last playing rules were revised. Move the mound, back up the bases, let them steal and move the fence. Make the field match todays players.
