Earthquake wakes up Western Carolina

    Small Earthquake Wakes Up Carolinas
    Quake Registers Magnitude 3.1

    COLUMBUS, N.C. -- Residents from all over the western Carolinas have called the FOX Carolina newsroom to report an earthquake on Friday morning.

    Residents from Old Fort, N.C., to Simpsonville, S.C., have called in to tell FOX Carolina that the quake woke them up around 6 a.m but Braves slept right thru the entire event.

    "My wife asked if I heard dishes rattling," said Dave Slater of Landrum. "That's usually a symbol of an earthquake. It was most definitely there."

    "I felt a big rumble," said Jennifer Patton of Landrum. "I thought it was an explosion on Interstate 26."


    The United States Geological Survey reports that a magnitude 3.1 earthquake centered about six miles north of Columbus, N.C., shook the area at 6:07 a.m.

    The USGS said on its Web site there are about 30,000 earthquakes between magnitude 2.5 and 5.4 every year across the globe. They described a magnitude 3.1 quake as a minor quake that may be felt but causes very little damage.

    This is a true story. We had just moved to L.A.. My wife was fearful since never having gone through an earthquake. The 2nd night there she woke me up and said there was a loud noise outside our house. She said it sounded like a "truck hit the building". I told her I didn't hear anything...she was dreaming...and to go back to sleep.

    I woke up in the morning, turned on the TV and found out we had a pretty good size earthquake hit. My wife said she was taking the boys to the airport and I was welcomed to come.

    ...and here we are in Charlotte!!!!!!
