In these Dog Days .... bridging between the summer season and the fall teams, what is everyone doing? Working out? Taking a break? Learning how to study again? Reading the summer book assignment?

    Wazup with everyone?

Fall practice has started for the On Deck teams, and they will be playing in Charleston this week-end. Personally my son has started workouts two to three times a week with a personal trainer, and is also in a physical conditioning class at his high school.

the ones who take time off get left behind, but one must be smart about his offseason workouts.

    yup!

good point but not all of them! Depending on your talent level and what you want to achieve in the game should dictate your schedule in the off season! Don t get me wrong soooo competitive today must work in the OFFFFFF..

Personally, I think the offseason should be used to get stronger faster, and more flaxible. look at workout regiments of pros today, most dont pick up a ball till about december (pitchers), and some position players dont pick up a bat til february. dont get me wrong these guys dont sit around twiddling there thumbs, most have personal trainers, or workout on their own. For the young kids out there especailly pitchers, take time off, and not one or two days, 3 or 4 weeks, but dont sit around playing play station run, lift, work on dry mechanics, becuase there are thousands of other kids out there doing the same amount of work or more. how much drive and inner will you have will seperate you from other kids, and you will begin to leave them behind. The offseason is not a time to take off completely it is a time for strength and FUNDAMENTALS.

CA, FL, TX, AZ kids play year round and have the top players/teams in the country. Many mid level pros go to Puerto Rico, Central and South America and Mexico to play in the "off season".

The fall is especially important for the '04 and '05 players. College and pro scouts are out in abundance at the various showcase tournaments looking for talent they may have missed during the summer and trying to lockdown the prospects they have been recruiting for several months. '06 players can get on a coach's "follow list" by playing in the fall.

Running, lifting, throwing programs, take place during the week on a players own schedule, but weekends are for "being seen". Most players I know are "down" (not playing competitively or attending organized practices) from November until after Christmas. Then they have about 6-7 weeks before high school tryouts begin. Even kids who play football on Friday nights can be found playing at tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.

Look at the "All Observer" team from this past season. How many players on that list work on their game year round?

These are just my own opinions and observations.

which is better?? a player playing football or working on baseball?? i am a believer in putting yourself in competitive situatiions no matter what sport. some of our best players also play other sports. their confidence level is increased every time they play in a game. of course they are still playing fall baseball on the week-ends. thoughts???

Great question...my opinion is if you are playing football..play football..don't play baseball on the weekends unless you have no intentions to play after HS.

If you are playing in tournaments, you will not be playing at your best level..kind of defeats the purpose, huh!!!

If you are playing baseball weekends only and just for the fun of it..sure, but wouldn't it be a little difficult to play an 8:00 am game after a tough Friday night football game where you need to recover from nicks and bruises?

i agree and our guys choose to do both? guess it doesn't hurt. they feel like they can keep their swing etc. by playing in a fall league on weekends. who am i to argue??
