Crest 42 South Caldwell 7

The Chargers had the chance to play in front of the home crowd one more time at Sid Bryson Stadium, and they made it count. The Charger defense came out and did what it has done over the last 5 games and that is knock some heads. It was a very hard hitting football game. The Charger D held the Spartans to 119 yrds rushing and 9 yrds passing. The only score for the Spartans came late as Crest had pulled it's starters. SR Brandon Spikes had a good game for Crest. He hit Hardee in the backfield a few times. He, along with guys like SR Tiny Petterson, SR Evan Bostic, SR Shawn Tate, and JR Mike Edwards were able to force the Spartans into some 3rd and long situations that they didn't want to be in. Thanks to this Josh McDowell picked off his 9th pass on the year. Just great team defense for Crest.

The offense continues to improve with the maturation of the o-line. Tosh Toms for Crest rushed for 119 yrds and 2 TD's. The 5'4" 150 Soph. only played the first half. Junior Donald Clark carried the mail in the second half as he gained 84 yrds and 2 scores. Junior Jordan Robinson continues to be the steady hand that guides the offense. He was 8-10 for 118 yrds as well as picking up some yards on the ground. His favorite target was Junior Bruce Smith, but Juniors Arthie Phillips and Mario Washington had catches as well. Brandon Spikes also crossed the goal line for Crest as they lined up in their heavy package.

All of the SR's got playing time for Crest in their final home game at Sid Bryson. Crest moves to 9-5 on the year and have won 13 straight playoff games.

This is also the 8th time in 11 years that Crest is playing in the West Championship.

I can't believe how far this team has come. Congrats to Roy Kirby and his staff along with a great group of young men on a very successful season. Everyone said that this was going to be a down year after the start. I'll take it.

Going into Grimsley, Crest only hopes that they are healthy and let the chips fall where they may.

got a question for you Smashmouth...

Since Crest had to move back up to 4A, do you think playing in the Big South Conference prepared the Chargers better than say if you would have been put in the NW4A?

 

I don't think so. Crest won state titles in '94 and '96 as members of the NW4A. I just think that it's the work of the coaches, the weight program, and kids buying into the Charger system. I also like the fact that Crest plays a tough non-con schedule. I don't want to take anything away from South Caldwell, but I think they only beat one team with a winning record. It helps to play some lights out games early.

One other thing, and I hate to admit this, but Shelby has had as much to do with Crest success as anything. Shelby made the other county schools kick it up and notch, because if you didn't you were getting left behind. That's just my thoughts
