This triggered a memory for me.... I didn't have time to look at it until today. It dates back to an article that came out about Ohio State when the Maurice Clarett mess was still hot...

USA Today had a paragraph in one of their articles... here is the link to the complete article plus the appropriate paragraph.

    USA Today article

In particular, this paragraph stuck in my mind.
Now, yes, the student in question earned "D"s in some courses, but it's obvious that "Tressel's Coaching Football" isn't an appropriate freshman course for college credit. "Issues Affecting Student Athletes" should be a no-brainer, 3 weekend review for all athletes, not a college level course.

I believe that addressing these types of issues is the intent of the legistation. This is an example of an athlete who would not be on track under the new 40/60/80 rule. That would immediately make him academically ineligible. Remember folks, the rules in place are primarily intended to address these types of problems in the money sports (football and basketball). Every other sport is getting squeezed in the middle between the Title IX cuts and the overall "school score".

At some point in time, even though it's meaningless this year, except as an indicator, I'll dig up the preliminary overall scores and the baseball specific scores for the NC D1's. It is an indication of which schools academically excel.

Scores for NC D1's and selected other teams that recruit NC heavily: Any school that is BOLD is currently below the cut line and must work on bringing the score before next year.

    Appalachian State, 945, 944
    Campbell, 951, 860
    Charlotte, 957, 933
    Davidson, 981, 1000
    Duke, 984, 926
    East Carolina, 940, 913+
    Elon, 971, 957
    Gardner-Webb, 936, 938
    High Point, 950, 917+
    NC A&T, 905, 824
    NC State, 929, 886
    North Carolina, 970, 952
    UNC-Asheville, 970, 940
    UNC-Greensboro, 953, 901+
    UNC-Wilmington, 981, 984
    Wake Forest, 979, 959
    Western Carolina, 958, 952

    Virginia Tech, 952, 888+
    Univ of Virginia, 973, 940
    South Carolina, 934, 912
    College of Charleston, 964, 902
    The Citadel, 939, 966
    Charleston Southern, 925, 965
    Clemson, 960, 911+
    Coastal Carolina, 935, 858
    East Tennessee State, 968, 929

Pluses indicate that score will probably change by April and move up. Passing is 925. Starting next season, scores below 925 will be penalized.

I guess this is the real bottom line ....

If you aren't a good student, the colleges will be "dis-inclined" to award an athletic scholarship. Students NOT receiving Athletic aid are not reported. Because of the Blending rule (D1's: 1150 SAT, 3.5 GPA, Top-10% of class rule), the academic aid is also limited. These rules will apply to the D2's also, but the academic rules are relaxed a bit. The average student/good athlete may be pushed to the D2's.

Your parents will have to pay more, but the oportunities will still exist. College becomes less affordable.

All of this is also "GENERALITIES", not specifics. Every individuals situation is different. Every college is different. Every coaching staff is different. It just makes it easier if you hit the books hard.

Man...after reading all of this stuff, I never would have graduated. My coach told me that turf management (cutting grass) and cuisine & wine tasting were perfectly acceptable courses. He kept insisting that the courses would help me in my future. Boy...was he ever right!!!!!

I would have to have a personal counselor to guide me through college nowadays.....

Geez....what happened to the good old days where a nice man would greet you after watching the grass grow on the football field with my bonus for doing such a great job!

My have times changed. The student athletes are required to workout throughout the school year. Play games as late as 10:00 pm. Bring millions of dollars to the University and their coaches...and if they receive a free dinner from a restaurant or accept $10 from a parent of a friend to wash his clothes. The school is placed on probation. I could go on for pages of the inequities of the NCAA towards a student athlete...but as Pop's says...the bottom line is you need to get your grades in order.

After all, isn't that why they are there in the first place?

No question about it, jnwta. But what some of the posters are saying is that some students do better in college than in HS for various reasons and NC was stating you need to have your grades in order before then. As colleges are tightening the screws for acceptance, is it leaving some student athlete's out of scholarship monies. Perhaps that student who is marginal will blossom in college because he has matured. But with the new requirements he may not get that chance.
