MY, how the times have changed... I am seriously concerned about the growing lack of committment that our kids are having these days... It used to be when someone agreed to do something, they did it. Sufficed to say, that doesn't happen these days. Since I have been coaching showcase ball in my spare time away from my high school team, I have noticed a disappointing trend. Kids agreeing to play for a team, then as the season goes on, missing games and not keeping their end of the bargain. For example, I know of kids who miss a game or weekend tournament to go to other showcase events. This speaks badly for the committment of kids today. I personally know of situations where the "prior committment" excuse was used only to learn later on that they signed up for the showcase long after they received their summer or fall schedules. That is a let down for the caoches involved who are giving up their time, but more importantly the teammates that were counting on them to show up.

What kinds of lessons are teaching about committment and word of honor when we allow our children (or encourage them) to not keep a committment? It is a crying shame that you can't accept a person's word at face value anymore. I guess I am from the old school in that if I say I am gonna do something, then I do my best to do what I said I would. To me, anybody that can't keep a committment is a person whose word means very little, if anything.

I realize that emergencies come up, there are family committments that come up too. I have always tried to work with those circumstances, but what I am talking about here is a willingness to blatently not keep your end of the bargain!

Just my two cents worth. Take that and a dollar and you can buy from the value menu at McDonalds!!

How do you handle a situation when you have baseball players that also play football There football coach is preasuring them to work out in the summer goe to passing leagues and all kinds of football camps instead of playing baseball in the summer. These kids are made to feel if they do not attend these workouts or camps they will not have any playing time in the fall on the football team how do you handle this situation? Alot of outstanding athletes are missing out on baseball because of these football coaches.

    Miss Games for Practice?

    Hmmmm. I'm confused.

If football is so big here in NC why the heck are our teams so bad? The few kids that can play wind up leaving NC to play! They even mentioned in on ESPN GameDay. So let me get this straight. Our football is just mediocre, but it takes precedence over our baseball which is not in the top grouping either (Florida, California, Texas, Georgia).

AND our top basketball programs are loaded with kids from New Jersey and Alaska (DUKE) and everywhere else (UNC)????

Unless your football coach has a track record of sending kids to the SEC tell him you'll be busy playing baseball this summer!

    it's not

it's not all about playing in college. Yes for some it is, but not the majority. leave it up to the kid and what his passsion is. everything will be fine. the football coach also wants commitment, ever thought of that?

    One Sport or A Compromise

When you ask a two sport player to give up his summer sport for your offseason program it doesn't sit well with me.

    Really?

You mean on par with Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida and California? It seems like every decent D1 in the land has at least 1 Florida kid on the team.

most of the best NC HS football players usually head to D1 univ's outside of NC (Many to the SEC).
