BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team extended its winning streak to six as it completed a three-game sweep of Erskine College with a two wins this afternoon, taking the opener 14-6 and claiming a 10-7 win in the nightcap. The Abbey improves to 24-12 overall and 13-5 in the CVAC, while the Flying Fleet fall to 21-15 overall and 8-10 in the CVAC.

In the opener, Erskine jumped ahead 4-0 in the second before the Abbey stormed ahead for good, scoring 14 unanswered runs, starting with five in the third. First baseman Will Breslin opened the scoring with a two-run single, and designated hitter Seth Waller followed with a three run blast to left center to give the Abbey a 5-4 lead.

The Crusaders blew the game open in the fourth, plating four runs, as leftfielder Tyler McKenzie ripped an RBI single, followed by two RBI doubles by Breslin and Waller to extend the lead to 9-4. It became 11-4 in the fifth, as catcher Josh Cable singled home second baseman Alex Castellanos, who had earlier singled, and centerfielder Patrick Atwell brought home third baseman Nick Popp with a sacrifice fly.

The Abbey ended the scoring in the sixth with three runs, getting an RBI double by Breslin and a two RBI single by shortstop Josh Haire.

Brett DiPasquale upped his record to 5-0 after yielding two runs on six hits in six innings of relief. He struck out three. William Buzhardt was charged with the loss. He gave up nine runs on nine hits in four innings of work.

The second game was a tight contest, as the two teams were tied at five heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Abbey exploded for five runs. Atwell led off with a walk, and following a flyout and a single by Udwari, Breslin was intentionally walked to load the bases for Waller, who bounced a single to left, scoring Atwell and Udwari for the go-ahead runs.

On the next at bat, Castellanos charged a single to right, bringing home Waller and Breslin. Castelllanos then stole second, and the throw sailed into the outfield allowing him to move up one base. Haire then fouled out to the first baseman, but nobody covered the plate, allowing Castellanos to score standing up to push the lead to 10-5.

Andrew Morton earned the win in relief, limiting the Flying Fleet to one run on five hits in four innings of work. He struck out three and walked one. Mike Maus was charged with the loss. He was responsible for the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. He surrendered one run on one hit in an inning and two-thirds.

 

OUCH

Davidson ran into a buzzsaw yesterday in Chapel Hill falling 28-3 to #4 UNC. Not much in the way of highlites in a game like that.
