I can imagine its even more difficult to make the right decision when you are a HS coach. You are already missing a lot of quality time with your family devoting yourself to your team.

It is interesting reading Collin's and Eagle's perspective. They both shared the same experience but arrived at different conclusions. And I can appreciate Observer's opinion to "go for it"; you only get one chance to raise your children.

And I really like aguyyouknow's post...well, well said.

This is a very good thread

    my take

Don't know if you folks will agree but I always found as a youth league rec coach it was easier to pull my own daughter (rather than others) out of a game in order to get lesser used substitutes into a game. I tried to be fair always and still play to win, but I recall several times pulling my daughter out more than others. Just seemed to make things easier to handle with potential parent concerns, but in reality it was not "fair" to my daughter (who was and still is an above average softball player).

this was in rec leagues, you know where you have minimum playing time rules per player per game.

any others who handled it this way?

Excellent posts - if anyone wants advice on coaching your own kid(s) in high school, hands down the very best I've ever seen is Pete Hardee at Watauga - and even though we don't always see eye to eye, he does an outstanding job with his sons. Most people wouldn't even know his sons were out there if it weren't for the names on the jerseys. Enjoy every minute, LegionPost46, even when he's about to drive you crazy - it all passes way too quickly!

My entire life all I've ever wanted to be is a high school baseball coach. Honestly I could care less if I'm a head coach or not. But when my son was born everything I wanted didn't seem to matter anymore. I am blessed to have a wife who loves to be at the ballpark and travels a lot with the hs team and the legion team in the summer.

I figure I've got about 4 years left where i can coach hs without missing anything. Then it'll be tough decision time. I honestly can say I only remember my dad missing one game in my entire life, a rainy cold day at snowden middle school. He even still makes it to most of the games I coach. Thats a special bond we have.

For those of you who have had kids while you coached, how much did you miss? Did you find yourself delegating more to assistants? I'm not sure I can handle having to decide between my program and my child. I'm definitely not looking forward to that one

Does that include Danny Hignight? Of course, Pete was more like a big brother, but Danny was a handful ;)

    A Handful?

Hignight was a handful? I'd like to hear more about that.
