i am far from being a pitching guru. there are somethings that i teach that many would probably disagree with. but i am game. maybe I can learn something.

Coach, why don't we start first with your basic concepts of pitching. What do you look for? Can you explain "balancing points"...and my favorite, how do you correct a pitcher that "flys open"?

    Two things!

balancing point is in reference to the pitcher especially in the wind up as he goes into his motion to be sure that he not only slightly shifts his weight back and then forward thru on the follow through and delivery but this is the "midway point" so to speak to ensure he isn t rushing thru his motion as welll as using all arm...
The pitcher should keep his glove NOT only aimed at his target as he is about to deliver the ball but also learn to take the inside of the glove to his opposite hip on the releasse of the ball this should help along with ensuring exactness with his plant foot as the ball is released!

Prose requires pauses, commas, and periods to help in its delivery. Pitching does not. lol

what do we look for?? a 6'4" stud that throws around 94. :ylsuper: since they are few and very far between we look for a guy that has a loose arm action, and doesn't have to be a max effort guy on every pitch. we, unlike colleges, look for location, movement and velocity in that order. if you can throw strikes and hit spots with more than one pitch you will be very successful as a high school pitcher.

balance point. this is where the pitcher gathers all of his movements into a position getting ready to go toward the plate. the main balance point is when the pitcher lifts his leg (thigh parallell to the ground) body upright he should seperate his hands at this point and get his momentum going toward the plate. however i teach that you shouldn't just fall to the plate but keep your weight back and get to a power position. (arm up fingers on top of the ball. front foot landing on big toe and most of the weight still on the back leg before we tuck and throw) very similar to hitting.

if we have a pitcher that flies open we work with the foot going down and then out before landing (helps keep the weight back) and trying to land on the big toe instead of the heel which will happen if you "fly open"

another thing that may help with this is to make sure the pitcher's glove is above his elbow so when he tucks, he is tucking downward instead of out and then down.

hope this makes sense and helps....... :woot:
