    Umpires

The umpires are entirely responsible for the trash talking that goes happens on the field. I feel that if the umpires do not take control of the game then the players can do anything they please. Thiis often times leads to post game actions that downgrade the the reputation of the team and their school.

I agree, but umps seem to run the gambit. Most are fair and hard working behind the plate. They don't want to influence the game, just ump it. But, it seems you may be calling for a more "agressive" form of umping ....

You're right that they can get to a kid with bad calls, but ultimately the player is responsible for his own behavior. It's his choice whether to retaliate or to exhibit self control. Coaches also need to lead by example. If they're going nuts over bad calls, the kids will too. If they conduct themselves properly and punish poor behavior, the kids will conduct themselved properly.

IMO - Its the coaches job to go nuts over a bad call. Its the players job to play the game. Let the coach do his job and let the players do theirs. (And bad calls are part of the game. They wont hurt much if you are winning by 10 runs.)

I also think umpires have enough responsibility without having to control trash talking as well - unless you cross over into the profane territory. The coaches need to set the example and lay down the law. Play the game like true athletes - and not like Beavis and Butthead.

Its simple - who would you rather have as a teammate - a guy that mashes the ball and busts his gut every play and stays focused - or a comedien with a smart mouth.

Players should realize that trash talking does nothing but diminish their value in the eyes of most coaches and scouts. It belies insecurity - or a bad attitude - or both IMO.

I used to tell my son, if you don't like bad calls you picked the wrong sport. Take up bowling...either the pins fall down or they don't.

That is one of the best post yet. Umpires are human, and will make mistakes. It's part of life to learn how to handle yourself during the good and the bad.

Trash talking is fine to a certain extent, but you better know when not to cross the line. You also better be able to back it up with solid play. Sometimes it even adds to the intensity of the game.
