I saw this on hsbaseballweb and found it interesting.

Would you allow your son to play for Coach Bobby Knight? Please think this through before answering impulsively? Could your son respond to him?

My son would have absolutely responded to Knight's coaching. He is consumed with being the best he can be and being on the best team he can be so Knight would have loved him. Mac actually played for an old school coach (Linwood Hedgpeth) for four years. Lets just say that the player's self esteem was not his top priority. Mac loved playing for him.

I have a personally autographed picture of him on my office wall, that he sent to me through an aquaintence here in town, last year at Christmas. I would definitely allow my child to play for him.

That is sooooo funny! Nice way to say it, BaseballMan

I actually had a coach that couldn't remember names. If you were red headed he would call you "Red". He had a nickname for everybody but it wasn't a form of respect. He truly couldn't remember names, much less cared if you got your feelings hurt

All kids respond to different things. A truly great coach knows what buttons to push for each player. I'm not sure that Knight has more than one button, so I'm not sure he is for everybody.

It would seem the type player that would respond best are the kids that can handle criticism well. Not all kids respond to yelling or screaming. That's why I asked if your son could play for him or if he would be better with some other coach

love his coaching talent but despise the language. so NO, he needs to clean it up a little bit. I stand strong on this issue

Don't get me wrong, Coach Hedgpeth got his points across without cussing. It was more of a sharp-witted, sarcastic humor. After every tournament the kids I was hauling would be in stitches over the things they overheard Linwood say under his breath. An example would be after a Pelican had taken a called third strike, "Jesus Christ, next time just go up there without a bat. You'll do just as well."

Coach Hedgepeth--- One of the finest baseball men in the state!! His name is certainly on any "who's who" list of high school baseball coaches.

Here's another Linwoodism. After watching a Pelican outfielder miss a cutoff man, he mumbled to not one in particular, "If you put that boy's brain in a bird, it would fly backwards."
