Big News at USC Upstate

Rick Pauly arguably one of the best pitching minds in the southeast has joined the coaching staff at USC Upstate. Rick is a fine person and also has a passion for softball. This is HUGE for Upstate!!! I am thrilled to see him coaching at the college level again and I know he will do a great job! Rick has done a lot helping pitchers in our area!

Pauly Joins Upstate Softball Staff as Volunteer Assistant


Spartanburg, S.C. – Longtime coach and instructor Rick Pauly has joined the USC Upstate softball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach, announced head coach Chris Hawkins Wednesday.

Pauly will begin his duties immediately and will assist Hawkins in every aspect of the program.

"I am extremely excited to add a coach with the background and knowledge of the game that Rick possesses," said Hawkins. "To be able to get someone of his caliber to come on as a volunteer is simply amazing to me. What he brings to the program will help us build on the success we have already attained. I couldn't be more excited to have Rick become a member of our staff and I look forward to him working with our players this fall as we prepare for the 2012 season."

Pauly has an extensive coaching, instructing and playing background in fastpitch softball. Prior to coming to Upstate, he spent one season as the pitching coach at the University of South Carolina from 2009-10. Prior to that, he spent five years as head coach at Spartanburg Methodist College from 2004-09, leading the Lady Pioneers to back-to-back Junior College World Series appearances in 2008 and 2009. He led SMC to a fifth-place finish in 2008 and a ninth-place finish in 2009.

Pauly's fastpitch roots go back to his playing days with his hometown team in Wisconsin, the Menomonie Blues, and progressed through his days of playing with the nationally recognized and ASA National Champions the Madison Farm from Madison, Wisc. As a player, Pauly competed in 11 ASA or ISC National and World Tournaments and also competed with Madison Farm at the U.S. Olympic Festival Games in 1987 and 1991. While still competing, Pauly was a State ASA Fastpitch Player Representative in Wisconsin and was also instrumental in the formation of the Western Wisconsin ISC Travel League. He is a former ASA Men's Fastpitch All-American.

Since the completion of his playing days, Pauly has been involved in coaching fastpitch at all levels of the game. Focusing primarily on pitching, he has coached at the 14U, 16U, 18U and 18 Gold levels of travel ball, spending many years with the nationally ranked Lil' Saints of Phoenix, Ariz. While in Arizona, Pauly was a volunteer assistant coach in the Arizona high school ranks, leading nationally-ranked programs at both Mountain Point and Desert Vista high schools in Phoenix. Since moving to South Carolina, he has coached travel ball, including helping start the Carolina Elite organization alongside current Upstate assistant coach and Elite head coach Bryan Pack. He has remained an assistant with the Elite since the organization was founded in 2007.

Pauly has spent a lifetime studying pitching in addition to his overall knowledge of the game. He has helped develop several young pitchers to pitching prominence, including his daughter, Sarah, who was a Division I All-American at Texas-Corpus Christi and who currently plays professionally in the United States and Japan. He is a high-level softball pitching clinician and through his individual teaching has helped many pitching students progress to the collegiate level.

In his efforts to service all levels of the game, Pauly served as the President of the Fastpitch Division of the Mountain Pointe Little League Association and also as the President of the Fastpitch Division of the Ahwatukee Little League Association in Phoenix, Ariz.

Together with his daughter, Pauly formed PaulyGirl Fastpitch company. They travel the country and into Canada hosting their High Performance Pitching clinics. Their softball pitching training video and pitching analysis software are just a few of the pitching-specific products they have developed.

Pauly and his wife, Joan, reside in Duncan, S.C., and have been married for 35 years. Their daughter, Sarah, splits time living in Florida and Japan as a professional pitcher and their son, Jesse, is an Animation Architect living in Phoenix, Ariz.
