OK need help from some of you umps. What does the rulebook say about this?? Last night double steal, runners steal 3rd and second. Feeling pretty good as both appear to be safe with no throw. ....BUT ump calls batters interference. Batter of course concentrating on the ball has no idea as did anybody else what has happened or what she did........ Now I could get it if it was a calculated effort to interfere..... Raise her arms up... initiate contact to help the runner etc etc..... Just wondering what the rule is on this. What is the batters official obligation??? Thanks guys...

I thought there had to be an actual throw and/or contact to be called interference

    NCAA rule book:
11.22.2 The batter shall not hinder the catcher or any other fielder from
catching or throwing the ball by stepping out of the batter’s box, or
intentionally hinder a player (e.g., on a steal/pickoff throw or a play at
the plate) while standing within the batter’s box.

EFFECT—The ball is dead, the batter is out, and each runner must
return to the last base that, in the umpire’s judgment, was
legally touched at the time of the interference.
    Notes:
    1. The batter’s box is not a sanctuary for the batter when a play is being made
    at the plate.
    2. If the catcher or her throw to a base hits the batter or her bat while she is in
the batter’s box, the ball is live and there is no interference unless the contact
is intentional and initiated by the batter.

It's always a dangerous thing when an "Umpires Judgement" comes into play. BTW, I pretend to be an umpire on the weekends so I'm talking about me too.
There must have been some kind of action that caused the Umpire to think the catcher was unable to make the play due to an infraction on the batters part.
Or.... the umpire was biased and wanted the other team to win.:FightenSmilie:

Thanks for that. Still curious. If she made any contact with the catcher I don't think he said it. Just said it was his "judgment" that she hindered the catcher(but the catcher never attempted a throw). ...... 3rd out with runners on 2nd and 3rd, so it hurt.

    Batter interference

I was at the game and it looked like when the catcher for Carson came up and was going behind the batter to make the throw to third. The batter done a tuck and roll coming out of the batters box and getting tangled up with the catcher keeping her from making the throw to third. I do not think she done this to keep the catcher from making the throw but it did happen.

Was the umpire Twitch? If you dont know who that is ask Emily and she will tell you who it was. It sounds like a bonehead call. They dont know what they are talking about! Good chance I'll be there Sat :]
