Athletics is missing from our Sports Departments

Is your sports program training athletes, or just players?

Coaches are good at teaching sports specific techniques: How to throw a ball or execute an efficient flip turn. Some include basic strength and conditioning routines. They are developing players who are good at playing their particular sport.

But a player is not an athlete. What’s the difference? To my way of thinking, being an athlete is a lifestyle. Athletes are committed, focused students of athletic improvement. Beyond the techniques needed to excel in his/ her chosen sport, the athlete understands the principles of improving their mental and physical capabilities and puts them to use. They engage in physical training programs to effect specific improvements. When they eat, they eat for a purpose knowing the importance of good sports nutrition. They foster consistent improvement through good recovery strategies. In other words, athletes use all available tools, on and off the field, to get their minds and bodies ready to compete and win.

In my opinion, our sports programs for our prep and high school athletes need to expand their idea of sports training to teach athletics. The result is healthier and more competitive young athletes who are more likely to reach their potential in their given sport.
