Payne is a different pitcher now than he was two years ago, a lot more mature, stronger, and faster. 2 yrs ago the ump behind the plate had never seen a breaking pitch like his, a true 12 to 6 , and had a lot of trouble calling it. the runs scored off him then was unearned. the last 2 off an error in the home half of the last inning.

With AC opening with St. Stephens at home on tuesday before they play Providence, i think Payne will start tuesday. The St. Stephens game means more than the Prov. game toward the Easter Tourney seedings. If Providence sees Payne it will only be for 1 inning. Coach Perry has 10 pitchers he wants to see early in the season. i look for Hefner, Teague, or Corbitt to start against Prov. depends on who starts against Davie on Wed.

Last year against N. Forsyth AC went with Hefner and they had trouble with him only beating him by 1 run, while they threw their best 2 pitchers. ACs catcher threw out at least 5 trying to steal in that game. That catcher plays for Guilford now, but Johnson has a quick release and knows how th handle pitchers.
