In addition to Buster Posey, the Giants got potential first-round picks with their next three selections, then got intriguing lefthanders later with King and Barnes. It adds up to a strong effort for first-year scouting director John Barr.
POSITION PLAYERS


Best Pure Hitter: C Buster Posey (1) hit .463 this spring as BA's College Player of the Year and has a low-maintenance, short swing. 3B Conor Gillaspie (1s) won the Cape Cod League MVP award and batting title in 2007, hitting .345. He finished the season in San Francisco as part of a predraft arrangement. >> Best Power Hitter: The ball makes a different sound off the bat of OF Roger Kieschnick (2). He's a streaky hitter who hits 'em as far as anybody. A Dominican Republic native, OF Juan Carlos Perez (13) was one home run off the NJCAA single-season record. He signed a 2009 contract due to visa issues. >> Fastest Runner: OF Caleb Curry (14) is a pure 7 runner on the 2-8 scale, though he was caught on 10 of 23 steal attempts as a pro. >> Best Defensive Player: Posey has strong catch-and-throw skills, including a plus arm that produced 94 mph fastballs as a pitcher. SS Brandon Crawford (4) has premium arm strength and solid athleticism and actions to be a plus defender at short.


PITCHERS


Best Fastball: RHPs Jason Jarvis (23) and Aaron King (7) have touched 97 mph in short stints. >> Best Secondary Pitch: RHP Edwin Quirarte (5) keeps everything down with a slider and good split-finger fastball. His sinking fastball reaches 92 mph as well.


ODDS AND ENDS


Best Pro Debut: LHPs Scott Barnes (8) went 5-3, 1.91 with 74 strikeouts in 57 innings, including two wins in the South Atlantic League playoffs. King went 4-2, 2.97, and eight of the 11 outs he recorded at short-season Salem-Keizer (including playoffs) came via strikeout. >> Best Athlete: Posey was a shortstop as a freshman at Florida State before moving behind the plate, where his athleticism makes him an elite defender. He also pitched in college and played all nine positions in his last regular season home game. >> Most Intriguing Background: OF Ryan Mantle (19) is a third cousin of Hall of Famer Mickey. LHP Ari Ronick (12) is a nephew of Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson. Jarvis left Arizona State in March and was drafted out of the independent American Association. >> Closest To The Majors: Gillaspie already has been there, but Posey should get there to stay sooner. >> Best Late-Round Pick: Perez's power has the Giants eager to see him in a pro uniform. Jarvis turned down six figures from the Angels out of high school in 2006 and was the closer on Arizona State's 2007 College World Series club. He added a changeup in indy ball and signed for $100,000. He needs maturity but has an above-average arm to go with excellent athleticism. >> The One Who Got Away: The Giants wanted RHP Ryan O'Sullivan enough to offer him a chance to be a hitter first as a pro, though they liked him better on the mound. Instead, O'Sullivan will play both ways at San Diego State.
