    Charlotte Christian 6 - Providence Day 4

The Knights advanced to the NCISAA 3A finals by downing cross-street rival Providence Day. The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the end of 1 behind dual 2RBI singles by T Kirkpatrick and K Fulginiti. Bard notched the W while W Muldoon took the loss. The Chargers stayed in the game on some misplays by the Knights but couldn't mount the surge needed to down the Knights. B James and C Zadoski led the Chargers with at least 2 hits each.

Next up against the Knights is the winner of Charlotte Country Day vs Cardinal Gibbons in a best of three game series.

Charlotte Country Day upsets Cardinal Gibbons

While we don't know the score, CCDS earned the right to face Charlotte Christian in the NCISAA 3A championship round by upsetting #2 seed Cardinal Gibbons.

In the first round of the final series, the tables turned and CCDS fell to cross town rival Charlotte Christian 11-1. The Knights C Whitley found himself on the mound in a bases loaded jam in the first, and the raucus Buc contingent worked a run across to take a 1-0 lead. But the joy in mudville was short lived as the Knights responded with 3 in their half of the 1st and never looked back. Whitley settled down to be quite effective and M Ganter was an offensive highlight blasting a 3 run HR to ice the victory. B Gaines came on for the Knights to close out the game.

Next game 11 AM @ Cary Academy in Raleigh.

Charlotte Country Day v. Cardinal Gibbons

    CCDS 3

    Cardinal Gibbons 1

    WP: Cory Hicks (3-2)

    LP: Lang (8-1)

LH: Jason Coker(Lead Off HR), Greg Cook RBI 2B

Cory Hicks pitched a complete game shutting down #2 seeded C. Gibbons and handing All State pitcher Lang his first loss of the season.

    Game One/Championship Best of Three

    Charlotte Christian 11

    CCDS 1

    WP: Whitley (5-3)

    LP: Fleischmann (5-4)

In the first game of the best of three series following the semi final game Christian wins 11-1. In their third game in 24 hours the CCDS team showed some early signs of life only to wear down and take a pretty good beating. Other details listed in earlier post.

    Saturday Morning

Charlotte Christian wins the state championship with a 4-1 win.

WP: Not sure who the coach will give the win as the starter was removed in the third with the bases loaded.

    LP: Drew Witman(7-5)

CCDS held in through the fifth down 2-1 on some gutsy pitching and good defense. A costly throwing error home by the pitcher for the third out scored two unearned runs in the fifth, taking the wind out of any CCDS comeback attempt.

Three of the four final 4 teams in the CISAA were from Charlotte this year and all have many returning starters next season. Christian starts 6 juniors. CCDS starts 4 sophomores and 4 juniors and PD starts 2 sophomores and 5 juniors.

    Bucs play tough

The Bucs pitching staff really throttled the potent Knight offense. Coker came in relief battling a stomach virus and gave up no earned runs over 3 or 4 innings. Witman, the starter made 1 mistake to the Knights McVerry who cleared the 345 marker in left center for a solo shot. The Knights manufactured the second run and what turned out to be the margin of victory. It was a great outing for the Bucs.

The Knights wind up 26 - 10. 7 of their 10 losses were by 1 run. A tough non-conference schedule included a 9-3 thumping by 4A Pensacola, FL powerhouse Tate HS; a 3-1 loss to USAToday's #5 ranked Houston Christian where Bard threw a 1 hitter; a 3-1 slip to Burns HS in the Shelby Easter Tournament and 2-1 downing to last year's NC 4A state champ JH Rose. Highlights included the 1st ever victory over perennial Florida power Westminster Academy, victories over conference champions Ashbrook HS 10-2 and Piedmont HS 16-1, a 6-1 victory over then-ranked #3 S Mecklenburg HS and an undefeated conference championship. With 11 juniors returning, The Knights may be very competitive in 2006.
