If you play by the rules:

In North Carolina, once you dress and hit the sideline you have used your eligibility for that week.

In some other states they break eligibility down by quarters, an give a player like six quarters he can play. That way on a team with small numbers a kid could dress and play on Thursday, then be used as a reserve on Friday nights or vice versa.

I might be wrong, but I believe the North Carolina Football Coaches Association put a request into the NCHSAA this year to try the quarter system approach, but the NCHSAA rejected it.

This is why they should have passed the 6 qtr rule. Take for instance Jordan Robinson at Crest. On each Friday he would have the chance to play 6 qtrs between that Friday and the next Thursday. Say for instance Gullate, the starting QB, goes down Jordan is suited and ready to play. If Crest is blowing the team out and Jordan gets in for the 4th qtr, he still could play the full JV game on the next Thursday. Your 6 qtrs would start over every Friday. This would have given kids like Jordan to get a taste of the varsity level and still let them get much needed playing time on the JV's.

the 6 quarter rule sounds like the right way to do it.
