I didn't go, but I'll help get this topic started.

There were only 45, or so, players at the workout. A scheduling conflict with the SAT's was a problem again this Saturday. And, some may have had games to make up from the rain last week.

Ashbrook sent 4 players. Juniors, Drew Martin (ss), Michael Bogaert (1b/rhp/c), Josh Duncan (2b) and sophomore Devin Harris (of). Harris has not gotten the "pub" like others on the Ashbrook team, but I hear he opened some eyes at the workout. Harris had the second fastest time in the 60, 6.7, just behind Cavasini's 6.6. That's not bad, considering Harris is 6'3" and 195 lbs. I also heard he had one of the stronger arms in the outfield. Too, many steps before he throws, but he has a canon.

Martin, Bogaert and Harris raked the ball well, especially into the "oppo gap" in right center. Duncan, who is coming off of an arm injury, fielded well, but didn't really show with the stick. Remember though, Duncan was MVP of the state chamionship series against East Chapel Hill, so he's clutch.

Bogaert didn't throw in the bullpen because he had pitched a 5 inning no hitter the night before, but he'll get some real attention at the next workout.

Now, fill us in on the others players at the workout!

I assume, from the lack of response, no other players attended the tryout?!

Sorry it's taken so long to get back on the board guys. For some reason, people expect me to work also. naughty, naughty, naughty.

The first thing that impressed me about the tryouts was the overall speed of the group. This is a very fast group of players with more than a handful and possibly as many as 20 guys running under 7.0 60's.

The 2nd thing that stood out was the relatively small number of players who were able to attend this first session. This was possibly a factor of the rain from the previous week. There might have been a bunch of rescheduled games going on for other players. There are two sessions. I guess most players will be attending the 2nd tryout session. I expect most of these players will be back at the 2nd session also.

Hitting: Obviously Intimidator Stadium isn't a small band-box like some of the high school fields. The wind was blowing and it was cold. No one went "yard", but there were a lot of guys making solid, line drive contact. Top-to-bottom, the group could stroke the bat. The catcher from North Stanly stood out. This kid's got real power. He has a nice stroke and really gets his powerful legs into the ball. Wish I knew his name. Martin from Ashbrook sprayed the ball well, using the entire field with line drives. A lot of guys could stroke the ball.

Outfield: A nice set of arms showed up. Throws to 3rd and home from right field were strong and on target.

Infield: Very solid fielding, but many guys were having trouble with the "back-hand". Since that's a reaction play, the balls weren't hit hard enough to play it well. Excellent players at all positions.

Pitching: Very few guys threw. Most players had either just come off a game or were getting ready for key conference matchups early this week. The early week rain had pushed most starters back late into the week so there were some relatively sore arms out there too. There was enough to see that this position isn't going to be a problem, based on who was there.

Sorry guys. It's just too early to tell about this one. A few teams were out in force and well represented. A few guys that you expected to be there were missing. You can never tell if that is because of the HS coach not participating and giving out forms to his players or because guys already have other plans.

Stay tuned for part 2. That's when we will know what the team looks like.

When is part 2?- The Charlotte Christian team has a number of players who completed applications, but were unable to attend the first date due to a rescheduled game with Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh. Originally, there was only one date provided for tryouts, which seemed odd. Hill (Jr.), McGuirt (Jr.), & Bard (So.).

I heard from a good source that they were only keeping two sophomores on the squads this year (new rule). If so, Thrailkill from TC will probably fill one spot from the West. Has anyone else heard this?

The East and West teams are for seniors only. The regional teams (8 of them) are for the underclassmen. If they only keep two sophs per team, it's still 16 sophs around the state.
