How many times do you suppose this happens in high school or college ball?
This happened recently in the New Bern/JHRose game and it just got me to wondering.
I have witnessed this in Little League on occassion but never HS ball.

I had this happen when I was coaching Bronco. I was coaching first base at the time and the batter hit a line drive that was one hopped (trapped) by the ss and the runner on first just froze in between first and second (like he should have on a line drive) but the batter kept commin and rounded first, passed the guy ahead of him and kept diggin. He ran right into the tag by the ss, but he kept on diggin anyways with the other baserunner right on his heels. Everybody was yelling STOP and flailing their arms, but they never slowed down and crossed the plate in a dead heat. I was standing at first with my hands on my knees wondering how I got myself into this mess. I looked at the homeplate ump and he rung them both up. That was a tough year.

    what really happened

What really happened was the runner at first was tagging because it looked like the ball was caught, and Towarnicky who hit the ball knew either he was out or it was gone so he wasn't paying attention to the runners ahead of him. I almost let them both have it but after I heard what happened i kind of understood. Maybe this changes the way yall look at it, maybe not. Take it for what its worth.

I saw this happen at the Gaston County Easter Tournament last year. Player hit what would have been a grandslam, but the runner at first only moved a couple of steps toward 2nd and stopped to watch the ball go over the fence. By that time the batter, who was digging for 2nd in case the ball didn't clear the fence, passed the runner on first. Credit a single, three rbi's and an out...plus embarassment!
