PA Systems?

    We are looking to install a PA system at our ballfield. We have one set of bleachers behind home that seats about 250 people and room for lawn chairs between the stands and the dugouts - so we don't have a large area to cover. We're not looking for anything fancy.

    For less than $500 we can get a 100 watt mixer/amplifer, 2 to 4 5"x8" outdoor horn speakers, a microphone, and a CD player. Or we can spend several thousand dollars for something like a Technomad system.

    Any advice on how much "oomph" you need to cover this much area? 100 watts, 500 watts? Has anyone tried to construct a low cost system and could comment on the results? Any advice on placement of speakers - how many facing the stands and how many facing the field?

    I'm going to post this in the Technology Forum also. One of the members installs systems in Major League Parks, so he might be of some help too.

    Sorry, I would be of no help.....shoot, I'm still trying to figure out how to run my CD player

    The 100 watt system will work fine if you are not running your speaker wires too far. I don't know where your field is, but if you put in a big system and there are homes around, you might find yourself in violation of a noise ordinance. I am pretty sure that your school has an "expert" on audio equipment who could put together some specs for you.

    Now, for the important part. What do you want the system to do. Play music between innings, between batters, sound effects, announcements? A lot of places are using computers for the music/sound effects. There are software programs available to organize all of the music and sounds you could ever need. They can be found on the internet. :xyzthumbs

    Yep. 100 watts should be fine, check with any local orgs about noise ordinance. See if you can get a powered mixer, what you said you could get for that money is about all you'd need, other than the addition of some sort of monitor speaker, something small you can use from the floor.

    The mom ....

    When I was an athletic director and we needed a new system my band director knew everything there was to know about systems. He actually fixed our football stadium with a great system. I don't know if you band director knows all about this, but most are pretty informed. I know my band director actually felt appreciated to use his talents for other things other than the band. Made him feel his was really an important and needed. Just a thought on how I did it. He not only knew what I needed, but also knew where he could get the best prices!
